Saturn 2D shmups that won't break the bank

Post by gregnash »

believe me, i'd love to get my hands on Radiant Silvergun, but at the moment i can't justify the £150.

anyone know of any good 2D shmups to get me started, for relatively cheap? i've just got an action replay cart so games from any region will suffice.

i've looked at a few games on the list of hidden gems, but they seem pricey

cheers

I really like Layer Section, a.k.a. RayForce, Galactic Attack, and Gunlock... It's a great shooter that I picked up for my JP saturn for about 800 yen, or 8 US dollars. The Saturn port is also great; i haven't detected any slowdown anywhere in the game. Also, I love the Parodius packs for the Saturn. I purchased one on eBay for $12 that was complete; some of the best cute 'em ups around! :)

Galactic Attack is awesome and used to be cheap, like $20. Darius Gaiden is the same. Those are the best starting points. Work your way up from there. Imports, I don't know what's cheap any longer.

Here's a few good shooters than can be had for relatively cheap;

.Detana Twinbee Deluxe - both Twinbee arcade games in one package, might not be your thing though if you prefer more modern shooters.
.DoDonpachi - great Cave bullet hell shooter, a bit more expensive, but really worth it.
.Game Paradise/Tengoku - fun vertical shooter set in a videogame arcade, the special edition is quite expensive, but on it's own the price should be quite reasonable.
.Gekirindan - the gimmick of this game is that each stage is set in a different time period, not one of the best shooters on the saturn but it's definetly worth a go.
.Metal Black - really enjoyable darius-style horizontal shooter.
.Sengoku Blade - totally awesome horizontal shooter set in fuedal Japan, one of my all-time favourites.
.Skull Fang - pretty standard vertical shooter, seems quite dated but still probably worth it if you can find it for cheap.
.Sol Divide - this fantasy style horizontal shooter seems to have a bad reputation, and while it's nowhere near as good as Sengoku Blade, it's still a pretty cool game.
.Soukyugurentai - one of the best bullet hell shooters on the saturn, and it can be had for really cheap, seriousley worth it.
.Strikers 1945 I & II - awesome pair of Psykio ww2 themed shooters, plus they're quite cheap.
.ThunderForce V - like DoDonPachi, this game is a slightly more expensive than the others, but it's totally worth it
.ThunderForce Gold Pack I & II - alternatively, the gold packs which collect all the classic ThunderForce games can be had quite cheap.

Also, I echo the other guys sentiments, Layer Section, Darius Gaiden & In The Hunt are all worth checking out. Hope that helps man, there's videos for most of the games on youtube that should help you decide.

This topic makes me want to get a Saturn just for building a solid SHMUP library. Many of these games cost much more on the PSX.

Here's a question for you: What were the good Saturn Shmups that came out in the US? It seems most of the good ones that get mentioned were JP only. I don't have the Action Replay, nor do I want to region mod my console.

japan saturn 50-80$

i actually already made this post in the shmup section...

Depending on your price range...sengoku blade i paid i believe 60$ for. Complete spine card and reg card in mint condition, best 60$ i spent on a retro game.
Yep, I know im the one ya love to hate.
