How do you feel about men wearing cargo shorts?

Post by Exhuminator »

Both the WSJ and Business Insider have posted recent stories about why "real men" should not wear cargo shorts. And furthermore, claiming cargo shorts make a man less attractive, if not juvenile. The stories:

http://www.wsj.com/articles/nice-cargo- ... 1470082856

http://www.businessinsider.com/why-no-m ... rts-2016-8

What do you think about these stories? Do you agree or disagree? If you're a man, do you wear cargo shorts? Do you think men look less attractive in cargo shorts? Do you think cargo shorts are truly about usefulness and not fashion?

I'll add my thoughts later.

Fuck that noise, man. Cargo shorts for the win. They make it way easier to carry handheld consoles and spare batteries.

I like the picture in the second article. It's trying to be like "see how bad the cargo shorts look?" but the actual message I got was "a blazer and nice shirt with any shorts looks idiotic, especially when the lack of color coordination is so bad that a software developer noticed it." And then the second picture comparing them to chinos, and those look terrible in the picture; the cargos looked much better.

I stopped wearing cargo shorts because I stopped wearing shorts. They got lost when I moved out of my apartment and into my house and I've been too lazy to buy new pairs. But I still wear cargo pants because that's where I keep my wallet. And when I fly the other pocket gets used for easy access to my handheld of choice while I leave my bag in the overhead.

But my favorite quote was the "people look at me and think 'you dressed him like that?'" She's more concerned with being judged by others rather than is she still attracted to her man.

Depends on the shorts and what you're wearing them with. They're casual fare, so should only be worn with a T-shirt. Polo or dress shirt? No way. Also, when they go almost to your ankles, that's a problem, too. But some people can make any clothing look bad.

Didn't read the articles yet, but...

When I go into clothing stores (at least, ones around my location) and look for men's shorts, 99% of them are cargo shorts. The few that aren't are khaki shorts that are too short. I'd rather look juvenile in cargo shorts then be that guy wearing short shorts.

I find shorts with big puffy cargo pockets to be uncomfortable. I look for shorts with the flattest possible cargo pockets. Consequently, the cargo pockets are hardly noticeable on the shorts I wear. That being said, the cargo pocket (the actual pocket) is about usefulness to me. If I'm wearing shorts, then I'm probably not wearing a jacket. No jacket means less pockets. I don't use my back paints pockets for anything, as I find that to be very uncomfortable, so I need to utilize cargo shorts during the summer and jacket pockets the rest of the year.

There's also the fact that cargo shorts are a much different fit than "dress" shorts. Shorts are not formal wear, so who cares if the cargo pocket is juvenile. I don't wear shorts when I have to dress up. Doesn't matter if it's the summer or not, if you need to dress above casual you can't wear shorts. So, if I'm wearing shorts, they might as well be something comfortable and not stiff "dress" shorts. I can't see what the problem is there.

If you need to dress "casual" and shorts are acceptable, then yeah, I guess cargo pockets are out of the question. You need to be wearing khaki shorts and a polo. But I can't even think of what this situation would be. Company picnic? That's so 80's sitcom, companies don't do that anymore. My company allows us to dress casual, but shorts are not allowed.

I'd love to know why "journalists" think that writing about my fucking pants is the most worthwhile use of their time.

These are marketing articles that are designed to make you question yourself or feel bad about yourself so that you'll buy something else. It's likely sponsored content from J. Crew or Banana Republic or some other overpriced store that wants you to look like a preppy douchebag and pay high pricetags like a sucker. Maybe if you play golf at the country club with a bunch of elitist jerkoffs that you can make money off of, then you should care about blending in to their world, but outside of that domain chinos look objectively worse than cargo shorts which you can even see from the side-by-side comparison photo in one of the articles.

Also, I use the big roomy pockets. I'm usually wearing shorts because I'm going to be outside, usually on a hike or walk. My cargo pockets hold keys, wallet, cell, granola bars, sunglasses, water bottle, purell, plus all the wife's lotion/chapstick/gum/lipgloss/etc stuff since women's clothes never seem to have pockets. I would look like I had weird lumpy hip tumors if I wore some tight fitting chinos. My wife would laugh at me if I tried to wear those short little boy shorts that these articles are advocating for. My wife's opinion matters more to me than some preppy twerp from Business Insider.

What JT said is scary sinister though.
