Together RPG - Beyond Oasis/The Story of Thor - 8/1-10/1

Post by Ack »

Hello, friends. Once again we find ourselves at that time.

Beyond Oasis

It's time again for Action RPGs, so we'll be focusing on Beyond Oasis, AKA The Story of Thor: A Successor of The Light, AKA The Story of Thor: Hikari wo Tsugu Mono. It's available on the Genesis/Mega Drive as well as the Virtual Console in all regions. For those who would rather play on the PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360, it can also be found in the Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection or the Sega Mega Drive Ultimate Collection, depending upon your region.

In Beyond Oasis, a young prince named Ali finds a gold bracelet that will give him the ability to summon elemental spirits. Unfortunately a silver bracelet has also been discovered, and it holds dominion over chaos and destruction. Ali must now race against the forces of darkness to save the isle of Oasis from certain doom.

Gameplay is more reminiscent of The Legend of Zelda and beat 'em ups such as Streets of Rage than the likes of Secret of Mana. That's because the game was developed by game developer Ancient, which also worked on such games as ActRaiser 2 and Robotrek(in conjunction with Quintet), Streets of Rage 2(with Sega AM7), and Car Battler Joe. Over time, Ali will gather bigger and better weapons as well as acquire the ability to summon spirits to aid him in combat.

Beyond Oasis is one of a series of games intentionally designed by Sega to fight against the console RPG powerhouse that was the Super Famicom under the title "Mega RPG Project", which includes the likes of Shining Force CD and Ragnacenty, AKA Crusader of Centy or Soleil. It was followed by a prequel on the Sega Saturn, The Legend of Oasis.

You should. It's like a 7 hour game.

Not sure I'd class this as an RPG, but who cares, this is a good time!

Has anyone played the Saturn sequel? How does it compare?

I'm probably going to do Legend of Oasis since that's the one I actually own. I realize it's the prequel.

It's totally an action-RPG. It's got level-ups (excuse me, ranks) and everything! It's also got a lot of brawler mentality to it, what with all the different moves like rapid and jump kicks. That's the one thing I miss in the sequel, the meaty feel to the combat.

I'm very tempted to pick this back up. I had a partial playthrough going not too long ago, and now I can play on the Mega ED instead of worrying that my cart battery is going to die on me.

(I have beaten it before, by the way.)

Have you played the first or looking into which to play?

Cause I've played both so many times and they are great imo.
If you can see the future while remembering the past, you may just have control of the present.
