It really is criminal how they just made the one game and swept him under the rug like that. He really could have been a great mascot for them going forward.Xeogred wrote:d00d I think under utilizing Ristar is probably one of Sega's greatest mistakes. That guy should have been Sonic's best bud and one of their key iconic mascots to this day, like Zelda or Metroid with Nintendo after Mario. Ristar was freaking amazing and brimming with personality. Definitely a strange one shot release.strangenova wrote:Ristar should've gotten more popular, and he should have got his own 3D platformer on the saturn. I honestly think his colorful world and arm stretch gimmick would have made for some great platforming in the 3d era.

Re: Random Gaming Thoughts
Well Sega actually made two Ristar games. The Genesis one, and a Game Gear one. The Game Gear version is largely different than the Genesis version:strangenova wrote:It really is criminal how they just made the one game and swept him under the rug like that. Agreed we should have gotten more Ristar though.
PLAY KING'S FIELD.
Re: Random Gaming Thoughts
Worth noting that both versions of the game are freaking fantastic.
Nothing about the GG version is a downgrade. It's really good.
Not saying it was suggested otherwise. Just putting in my two bits.

Re: Random Gaming Thoughts
It looks like Ristar came out right around the Saturn's debut so that explains why I didn't have it as a kid. I found a copy a couple of years ago only knowing that it was a pretty well received game. I was really surprised how good it was. One of the better platformers of the 16-bit era probably.

I knew there was a game gear version, but I always assumed it was just a port of the genesis game.

I got a SECOND professional monitor. I think I'm officially a nerd now
It's a Sony PVM 20L4. Really great monitor and it must have an extremely low line count, it looks super colorful and bright
Now the only issue is getting a table for it. It weights 31 kilos D:

Re: Random Gaming Thoughts
Looks like it was just about a year ago that I was last talking about Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter, according to the date of my last save on my replay of the game (from scratch on the JP version). I left it kind of in limbo, largely because I sort of feel guilty about playing through a game that I've beaten before. I don't think I'd even powered on a PS2 in that time, either, though. I felt like getting back to it today, but imagine my dismay (and bewilderment) when I found that all of my DualShock2 controllers seem to have shit the bed.
I went through a battery of simple trouble shooting techniques, and it really seems like it's the controllers themselves, but all three display slightly different symptoms. I've put a lot of use into each one, over different periods: initially with the standard black, then the translucent blue, then the silver. The pack-in controller doesn't register any inputs, but is probably properly receiving 5V since the Analog led works with that button. The translucent one doesn't even do that much. The silver one (which is the one I've normally used for the last eight years) doesn't input the right d-pad function when pressed, on starting the console, but after a bit of time just constantly repeats the right d-pad input.
I've never had controllers just stop working, like this. I'm not sure it's really worth my time to try to fix them, but I might have to check them out, electrically, just because I can't really understand how this would happen. As much as I hate Nintendo hardware for all the places they cut corners, it's possible that Sony might be worse. I shudder to think about what the Nintendo Playstation might have been like if it had gone into mass production.
