I'll add my thoughts to the ones I've played:

- Dragon Quest 8 (If you enjoy the classic JRPG formula, this is a good as it ever gets.)
- Valkyrie Profile 2 (Beautiful game, but I'd recommend a guide, oblique late game design.)
- Arc the Lad Twilight of the Spirits (No opinion, but I own it.)
- Shadow Hearts Covenant (No opinion, I own it, LOVE the first game though, I beat Shadow Hearts TWICE, which is something I never do with RPGs.)
- SMT Nocturne (My all time favorite PS2 JRPG so far. This game just resonated with my soul.)

>Digital Devil Saga
>Rogue Galaxy
>Mega Man X Command Mission

I own sealed copies of all those, never played them either. :(

>Persona 4 (I just don't know if it's for me!)

I own this on PS2 and Vita. Played it yet? Ha ha, nope.

>Unlimited Saga

I put some time into this, thought it was cool. Then I found out later it's supposed to be a horrible game. I don't know man, I like games that try to be different.

Dude I shit you not, I have computer games I bought in the 90s that are still sitting on my PC shelf unplayed. My backlog is older than some of the members here. I tell myself I will play them all when I retire. Otherwise it will be somebody else's problem when I die. "What are we supposed to do with all these damn video games?" "I don't know. Throw them in a dumpster?" "Okay."
Gamestop would throw them away for sure.

My fear with SMT Nocturne is doesn't it kind of play a bit like Pokemon (sorry) with catching monsters and stuff? I'd have a hard time thinking of a JRPG I've played with that mechanic that I actually enjoyed. Maybe FFXIII-2 (yes I'm very sorry), though I still would have rather had actual characters fill that third slot. I never want to catch monsters in RPG's. lol

I did like the chunk I put into Shadow Hearts, not sure why I stopped.

You've got it backwards bud, Pokemon plays a bit like SMT. SMT is the OG.

In Nocturne you don't throw balls at monsters to catch them. You have a conversation with them. You negotiate an alliance. But that doesn't mean the alliance will last, because these are demons with their own agendas. If you piss them off, they will leave your party, or turn on you even. Can't take anything for granted in Nocturne. Negotiated party demons can also be fused with other demons to create more powerful demons. You'll be doing that a lot and enjoy it, or you'll be stuck with some weak demons.

As to whether you'll enjoy catching demons and stuff, I don't know. I can tell you this much. I don't give a damn about Pokemon, but I freaking love SMT.

I didn't think much of Shadow Hearts the first time I played it. But I came back later with an open mind and found out the game was way deeper than I first thought it was. Ended up having a blast with it (tons of secrets). It was the same deal with Koudelka.

I started Valkyria Chronicles II this afternoon. I'm still really early in the game - only played an hour or so - but I'm really digging it. I wasn't sure how it would translate from the PS3 to the PSP, but all in all, I'm really satisfied with the control scheme they went with.

Dammit Ex, beat me to recommending VC3. VC3 is better than VC2 in every way, so if you're enjoying 2 you'll love 3.

Awesome to hear that. I beat and loved VC1 and VC2, so I've been hoping VC3 is up to par. It's in the list of the next three SRPGs I plan to take on (when I'm in SRPG mood). The list is Valkyria Chronicles III, Tactics Ogre: LUCT, and Jeanne d'Arc.

Though I haven't played it myself, I've heard that VC3 is better than 2 in every way, and much more like the first game in terms of mission sizes.

I'll need to get a bigger memory stick before I can play that (my PSP only came with a 1 GB, and since everything I've played is UMD, I haven't gotten around to upgrading yet), but I'm hella excited. Valkyria Chronicles is one of my favorite SRPGs of all time.

Not to beat a dead horse coming from me, but considering VC1 eventually got a nice PC and PS4 port, I'm still hoping Sega will maybe finally bring 2-3 to more platforms. I still need to play the first, but I watched a friend play a LOT and the whole series looks great to me. I'm not always in the SRPG mood but it looks like a really cool take on it.
