What RPG are you playing right now?
Re: What RPG are you playing right now?
I don't understand why III is so beloved, either. BoFIV is way better in my opinion. It was pretty late in the lifespan of the PSX, coming out earlier in the year that the PS2 was released stateside.

I should have played 4 by now. Problem for me was that BoF2 and BoF3 were so mediocre they put me off the series.Xeogred wrote:Breath of Fire is weird. I didn't like 3, but 4 blew me away and nobody ever really talks about that one. Was it late in the PSX's lifetime or overshadowed by something else? I have no idea. From the bits I've played of the series, it's basically the only one with a great story.
You should just drop 3 and play 4.
I'm a fan of BoF1 though.
PLAY KING'S FIELD.

Sarge! Finally someone else.
The only knock on 4 I can side with is that yeah, the enemy sprite work is amazing in 3. I think 4 had more polygons here and there... but the game was still gorgeous. You could still rotate the camera in most areas, but it was at fixed angles. Just had a nice sharp look to it despite being a weird mix of 3D and sprites. It looks great, wheres my beloved Xenogears kind of looks like diahhrea sometimes.
That happens Exhuminator, but you definitely owe it to yourself to check it out. It is shockingly good and maybe the best traditional JRPG Capcom ever put out. The one element I love about it (besides everything) is through numerous parts in the game you get to play as the main antagonist at times and see things from his perspective and journey through his path a bit too.
Can you handle the 90's?
Guess this game just needs more awareness.

Started a little bit of Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story. It seems like it's RPG... ish. But all the scripted stuff takes too long. I don't want big scripted sequences. I read quickly and love words. I do not so much love pantomime.

You should give Breath of Fire II another shot using Ryusui's re-translation patch.Exhuminator wrote:I should have played 4 by now. It brought the game from being mediocre to being one of my favorite SNES RPG's. Capcom's butchered translation makes the game practically unplayable.
Re: What RPG are you playing right now?
I think Capcom was a lot more careful about their sprite scaling than S-E was in Xenogears. It helps things look a lot more cohesive, definitely.
By the way, Exhuminator, I bogged down in BoFIII; I'm sitting at like almost 30 hours, but hit a brick wall of a boss. I didn't have that issue at all in BoFIV. It is definitely one of the best traditional RPGs I played for the PSX.

Re: What RPG are you playing right now?
BoF3's last boss is utterly insane. I breezed through the entire game (without using a strategy guide even) only to be massively annihilated by the last boss, over and over again. The amount of grinding it takes to overcome that situation isn't something I'd suggest as being "fun" or well designed.
BoF2's retranslation probably helps. But I remember not enjoying the scenario design itself. When I quit playing it, I remember fighting a boss in a frying pan while trying to escape the frog kingdom or some such nonsense. To say I wasn't engaged in the plot design would be an understatement.
BoF2 does have that penis skirt final boss though, so that counts for something I guess.

Agreed. 5 is the only great game in the series.Xeogred wrote:You should just drop 3 and play 4 5.
Yes, I've beaten the PSP version.BoneSnapDeez wrote:Anyone try III on PSP?

Don't forget the Italianesque gibberish.marurun wrote:Started a little bit of Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story. It seems like it's RPG... ish. But all the scripted stuff takes too long. I don't want big scripted sequences. I read quickly and love words. I do not so much love pantomime.
Up to the first save point. As far as I could see it's effectively the PS1 game running on the emulator, maybe with some tweaks to actually make it a native app. So I guess it'd be better than the PS1 version because load times?Anyone try III on PSP?
