I just don't understand how something doesn't get boring long before 1000 hours. I don't mean that in an elitist shithead way either, I really don't get it. But let's say I did get it. I still wouldn't be able to do it. I do good pulling 15 hours a week of gaming time in, due to life responsibilities. I'd have to quit my job, quit my wife, quit chores, and never leave the house to manage that kind of time sink. Not worth it for me personally.

It's the friendship and camaraderie with the other gamers that's more important than the games themselves. WoW becomes like a "second life." That's why all these games people sink 1000 hours into are online games and not The 7th Saga or Pengo or Mugen Senshi Valis.

I have a few friends with 2,000-3,000 hours on DOTA2. I think Bone is right though and that multiplayer gaming must add up.

70 hours has consistently been my threshold. One of the last longer RPG's I played was Dragon Age Inquisition and when I hit that mark it was like, "okay done with side missions it's time to wrap this up". I think I had about 80 or 90 hours on Xenoblade and remember taking a few months off. Skyrim took me about 2 years to finish eventually, had somewhere over 100 some hours total. Which sounds like a lightweight compared to some fans. I'm on that rants on open world fatigue thesedays, I think next time I get to one I'm going to try to super focus on the main missions only and see how that goes.

I sunk 100 some hours into platinum runs of Dark Souls 2 and 3 though, which was a few runs up to NG++ for both. I'll have to check my DS2 time but I swear it was like 150 or something, I felt like something possessed me. I'm probably one of the biggest Souls fans on the board but even I get taxed on them, but there are definitely fans that just replay them endlessly with new characters or go into NG+x9+ etc.

I try not to focus too much on time though. I don't let long games scare me off usually and I can make time for it, though the mood has to be right. I think it's just more genre dependent to me though. MMO's have no end and I want nothing to do with them, or the new loot types that are the craze now like Destiny and the Division, yuck. I prefer a beginning, middle, and an end.

When a game is really good and one I love, 15-20 hours is a nice soft spot. Like RE4 or something.

Yeah I would have a hard time playing a game for 1000 hours. I've maybe put in a couple hundred hours into Mabinogi, but that was over about 4 or 5 years and I've quit playing a while ago.

Other than that I very rarely put in a lot of time in one games since I have way too many games I want to play. No point in spending all my time with just one! :lol: Not that I don't enjoy playing longer games (I've put in about 90 hours into Persona 4), but I often have a hard time playing a long game when I know I could play several shorter games in the same amount of time.

It's very much this. Especially if you get into raiding mode. My WoW cycle was hop on and do dailies or other such raid prep for restorative and buff items and bullshit with clan mates, maybe play an alt, then we'd raid for 4 hours. When we were learning dungeons we'd do this every night, but eventually we'd get things on farm status so we could do each dungeon in a night or two. But the big thing is you're doing it with a group of friends. The game is just the thing you're getting together on; the real focus is the getting together.

When my guild self destructed due to some drama that basically got me out of WoW, because my friends had spread to the four corners of the server. I've tried a few MMOs since but none have gotten their hooks into me since I didn't really find a group that clicked in the same way (also, MMO design has trended to smaller groups and shorter dungeons, so there's less of that conquering adversity feeling).

Yeah, it's the social bit. I have put 250+ hours into Payday 2 since last Thanksgiving, but the vast majority of that has been while playing with friends, be it Fastbilly, noiseredux, or my buddy Xen. I likely wouldn't be anywhere near this without them. Heck, I probably wouldn't have started playing without them.

The only non-social games I've put that much time into are Pokemon Pearl (I surpassed the max game clock by playing more than 999 hours and 99 minutes) and Fallout 4. I'm getting close with Civilization V, but again, that's almost always playing LAN games.

I've put about 60 hours into PSO this year, so far. It took months and felt like a huge time commitment. :lol:

As mentioned, usually at some point social aspects take over. Just like the amount of time people spend here on forums adds up. Part of logging into an MMO or something is to chat and (virtually) hang out.
Also figure, most of those games are constantly evolving, so if you enjoy their particular mix of elements, it's easy to keep playing for a while. Or you can spend time on forums complaining how such and such change or addition ruined everything and the old version was better :lol:
I would say that between those to elements, people tend to aspire to play online games at a higher level than offline ones. At least, I don't know anyone customizing hundreds/thousands of lines of scripting to monitor or optimize their character offline. :roll:

It's also a matter of timeframe and focus. If your 15 hours a week of game time was predominately put into one game, over the course of years, you'd rack up thousands upon thousands of hours. Plus, for some games, people may tend to leave it up and running even when not actively playing, which will increase the recorded time.

Still is different strokes though. I got bored with WoW around level 70, I think, when I tried playing it last. Meanwhile my main FFXI account is somewhere in the 800-900 day range, though not currently active to check exactly. To be fair, most MMOs, I just solo, but XI I've been part of social stuff.

I've put 100+ hours into other online games, but I don't think I've quite broken that with any offline single player games. Probably the 70-80 hour range at most, and most things half that or less, even ones that "could" go longer like the Bethesda Fallouts.

Well that's the difference with me then. I'm not a very social person, especially not in real time. The blathering I do here on this forum is the most social I am online by far. (I do read other forums though, just don't post on them.)

I want to be clear I wasn't insinuating that if someone plays a game 1000+ hours that there's something wrong with that person. I'm just saying that personally I couldn't see myself doing that, at least not with any online game I've seen so far. Perhaps a true virtual reality world with massive complexity and vast player agency would do the trick though.
