I've noticed my times seem to be a little shorter than HLTB, but yeah it's a nice source of reference for me.

Even back in the day it's always irked me when games don't keep track of your time!

1: I absolutely hate repeated (same type of) quests / missions, but I'm sure most do. I played the hell outa Destiny on Xbox one, and bought the expansion, bought the expansion, bought the whole other limited edition game for.....another expansion. I must say I just got bored. Even though Destiny is fairly good about ..when sh*t gets boring, they freshen it up.. After a while the missions just all blurred together as far as what you were doing. Guess it's like that with most games though.

2: Absolutely hate "pay to win". Gonna bring up Destiny again.....sue me. When they introduced "pay said amount to start at level 30," that was a major slap in the face to my 2500+ hours logged, my best friend / Destiny cohort's 3800+ hours. We started there. You should start there. I think that actually turned a lot of people off because half the people I played with quit playing around that introduction.

3: No end game. I have no examples off the top of my head, but one example of great end game is Diablo anything, but specifically Diablo 3. It's never ending, and to me it never gets old because you constantly working toward a higher level.

4: Yes.....I get to vent. And yes I'm still going (ha). Last one (I think). Bad controls. I downloaded Crimson Dragon for Xbox one which, if you've never played it, is a basic on-the-rails dragon shooter (sound familiar?) Great fun. Great gameplay. Great graphics. Terrible Controls. Woulda' loved it probably. Now it's just somebody that I used to know. punny

I did the math on this. Destiny launched on September 9, 2014, and beginning on December 15, 2015, you could pay to boost your character to level 25. There are 462 days between those two dates. If your friend played 3800 hours in that time frame, that means that he played the game for 8.25 hours per day, every day for over a year. (Similarly, if you played the game 2500 hours, then you played it 5.4 hours per day, every day.)

That's a lot of time.

That sounds about what I was doing during my WoW addiction. Granted, I was in college at the time, didn't go to bars/parties, and skipped most of my classes once I realized I just needed to do well on exams to pass, so it was much easier to hit that level of time/day.

My brother and one of my good friends used to each play WoW 50+ hours a week. I asked them to explain the logistics once and they each had the same answer. They'd start after dinner on weeknights and go to bed once absolute exhaustion hit. Saturday and Sunday were both dedication to 12+ hour sessions. Wow almost destroyed my brother's marriage. I tried it once, got bored by level 10.

My thing was the original Guild Wars. My best friend from work we met months into my employment saw a few things on my desk and got to asking so I bought into it. We did the expansions, played all of it out, even went back for more, then got into doing the team based stuff for years. Eventually it petered out, thankfully not while I was working remotely out of town for 3 years. It was just not for the game but to keep in contact and bs regularly. When I got back shortly after GW2 popped up, now that one takes the WoW formula, gives it the finger (no monthly charges, and no pay wall to succeed either despite an online optional shop in game), and fixes all the other gripes. Damn game is huge, we went at it for a better part of about a year if that, but then he had a widow maker heart attack and died on his bed after a shower just sitting there sadly. I tried to play the game a couple times after, both for that matter, but I couldn't do it, it was depressing and I couldn't remove (as he was technical leader) the guilds we had either. My nephews bought into GW2 and I felt forced/compelled to play for a few months, but let them in on the why I wasn't jazzed about it and quit.

Sometimes I consider going back in, especially with the random emails like the one for 1/2 off the expansion pack sale going on now but I doubt I will. It's a hell of a game you can do whatever you want in, but I'd really probably have to start over and I have enough crap going on I can't sink 3-5hrs a night into it anymore.

The most time I ever put into a single game was 115 hours*. I can't imagine being able to put 1000+ hours into a single game. I simply would have lost interest in it long before then. If I could find games that kept me thoroughly entertained for that many hours, I'd be buying far less games that's for sure.

I worked with a dude who put 2000+ hours into Destiny, and he was still playing it when he quit his job. He would bring his iPhone over to my office and show me recorded videos of stuff he did while playing it. Nothing I ever saw him do made me want to spend a single hour with the game, let alone thousands. I guess that just goes to show how different people's tastes can be. He never seemed interested in any of the games I was playing either.

Even at my worst, I could never put that kind of consistent gaming time in. Wowzers.

The most time I ever spent with an RPG, at any rate, was Xenoblade. Well, at least a single playthrough. I'm sure I've put more than that into Chrono Trigger replays. I don't know how much time I dumped into Tecmo Super Bowl, but I'm willing to bet it's a lot.

Actually... about 20 minutes per game... 16 regular season and three playoff games... all 28 teams... plus some fudge factor with stat obsessing and playing favored teams again... probably around 200-300 hours over the years. I am clearly a piker.

(Running these stats also lets me know that I wasn't crazy in remembering having beaten it with every single team. Even with just an hour of gaming time a day as a kid, that's doable, and I certainly didn't do it over a single year, but over at least three. Other games to play, you see. :) )

+1

I just don't understand the appeal. There are so many good games out there, I can't imagine spending 1000+ hours on just one of them. (In that amount of time, I could beat nearly every unfinished game in my collection - even the bad ones - with time to spare. At that point, I guess I would have to take up pottery or something...)
