Resident Evil series appreciation thread
Re: Resident Evil series appreciation thread
The swimming was well done. And the hit detection was fine; the issue was the Oozes moved around too much.

Re: Resident Evil series appreciation thread
I loved Revelations too, but only because I used gyro aiming on the 3DS. I later went back to it with the second slider attachment and it was garbage. No amount of Miss Valentine in a wetsuit was going to make me play through the game again that way. I messed around with the demo on PC and that would be the ideal way to experience the game, but the system requirements are just out of range for my laptop.
I think that Revelations 2 has a better story so far. Even though I've never been a fan of Claire. Actually it's odd, RE2 is probably my favorite classic RE style game, but I like the two main characters the least. Maybe that's a testament to how well the game is made. That and I am a sucker for "shit hits the fan in a major metro area" scenarios in film and video games.
Anyway, I think that RE5 is fine. It improved upon what RE4 had, gameplay wise, maybe to a slight fault. RE4 overstayed it's welcome for me and the villain was... I'm sorry the whole thing was just so silly. Leon's character was radically altered for the game as well. Gone was the bright eyed rookie cop and in his place was something equal parts Squall Leonhart and a Cloud Strife. But I digress. RE5 is paced better, IMO, and the addition of co-op adds a new level of tension with its risk vs reward gameplay. Should we split up? What happens if one of us is wounded and starts bleeding out? Can the other player get to them in time? Cracks appear when you don't have the opportunity to play with another human being. Though with some work, unlocking an infinite ammo magnum will ensure that Sheva makes it through the game just fine on her own.
RE5, like RE4, should be viewed as a "strategic placement action game". The player needs to pay close attention to distance and know when to drop their weapon and reposition. Sure, control setting D allows you to strafe, but it is nearly pointless as Chris and Sheva cannot move and fire. Oh, and A couple of things about this complaint:
1. We may not be talking about a real life first person sim here, but anyone who has tried to step from side to side while pulling the trigger will tell you that it's an excellent way to waste ammo.
2. Similar to to RE4, RE5 is built around this design decision to stop and fire. Enemies rush, but stop short before attacking. At this point it is up to the player to draw and fire at the appropriate limb to interrupt their follow up. Learning this system and using it will reward with melee prompts. This further leads into RE5's meta game, which is abusing invincibility frames that follow these prompts (and other actions). Think fast and you can manage a crowd while standing in the middle of it.
I love how RE5 works when you understand things beneath the surface. It's very "videogames" in that respect. Like when the player intentionally takes damage in a MegaMan title so that they can abuse the short window of invincibility to scoot through tough sections. It's one of the last Capcom games to play this way.

I kind of see what you're getting at with the last point there. In a super strange way RE5 feels a little arcadey to me, in a neat way. I definitely like RE4 way more, but I agree that outside of Ada Wong's show stealer scenes I find the random offshoot story to be pretty lame compared to the rest of the series... but at the same time change isn't always bad in terms of gameplay and location/story, so maybe it doesn't bug me a ton.
Who knows but I definitely prefer the mansion/urban/Metro areas of the other games, the Umbrella involvement and viruses, STARS, and of course Wesker. Leon was at the right place at the right time to become a popular icon in the series, but he definitely isn't that integral to the story compared to Jill and Chris, and maybe even Claire.
What do you think of RE6? It was cool to see it bring the Las Plagas and virus stuff together, but the plot blowing up to a global epidemic is just too silly and over the top for me. A bit beyond the cheesy B-grade bad compared to the other games.

Hmm, I never thought about the control scheme's being a driving force in my enjoyment of the game, but that would explain why I didn't enjoy the game nearly as much when I replayed it on Wii U.wip3outguy7 wrote:I loved Revelations too, but only because I used gyro aiming on the 3DS. I played Revelations on the PC, so control issues were nonexistent.

Re: Resident Evil series appreciation thread
I actually haven't played 6. I sold my PS3 before it was released. All of the bad press and opinions have kept me away from the HD release. I was in GameStop yesterday and I came very close to buying RE6 and the REmake set. I have read that RE6 has fantastic gameplay, so maybe I should just get it over with and pick it up.Xeogred wrote:What do you think of RE6? Yeah, Rev was definitely designed around being able to quickly but precisely aim, requiring limb and vulnerability shots with little warning. Even the 3DS version feels like it was designed around gyro aiming, which is mouse-like in its execution. Rev 2 fixed all of this by adding a more forgiving dodge button and larger hit boxes.MrPopo wrote:I played Revelations on the PC, so control issues were nonexistent.
...that giant dead-zone tho
Re: Resident Evil series appreciation thread
Yeah, best to play it for yourself to find out. I've played far worse than RE6, it was definitely exaggerated.
I played Revelations on the PS3, controls were fine but that doesn't excuse the dooky gunplay coming out of RE4 and RE5 when I played it.

Re: Resident Evil series appreciation thread
I played through about half of the single player in Umbrella Corps today. Then I played through about an hour of the multiplayer. Everyone was right; this game is rubbish. The single player would be at least entertaining if it weren't for an abrupt difficulty spike and instagib enemies that sneak up on you like damn ninja. The online, however, is just...no. The games are 3v3, but the maps are (at least in my opinion) too small for teams that size. There's also no hoard mode (at least not that I've found). The objective matches are still 3v3 on maps the same size except now you have objectives other than "kill the other guys."
It's a shame, too, because I think it plays really well. The good, tight gameplay just can't make up for the mountain of problems, though.
