30-Game Console Challenge

Post by Sarge »

So, we've all talked about the NES, and how cool that system is, and how surprisingly awesome the lineup is for it. So, the real question is: what would you include for other systems? If, say, you were to want an SNES version, what games would you include in your 30-game lineup? (Good luck if you're going for the Virtual Boy. ;))

Probably would be better with a few ground rules:

- At least half of the titles must be first-party
- There should be some diversity in the third-parties (i.e. not all Konami or Capcom)
- The system should aim for genre diversity as well
- No licensed titles (that just gets messy)
- Huge sellers and important genre-defining games should receive extra consideration

That's about all I can think of now. :)

I'm definitely gonna post my pick for a SNES plug-and-play 30 game list when I get home from work.

I think it would look something like this
Chrono Trigger
Contra III: The Alien Wars
Donkey Kong Country
Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest
Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble
Earthbound
Earthworm Jim
F-Zero
Final Fantasy III
Gradius III
Kirby's Dream Land 3
Kirby Super Star
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
Mega Man X
Pilotwings
Secret of Mana
Sim City
StarFox
Super Castlevania IV
Super Double Dragon
Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts
Super Mario All-Stars
Super Mario Kart
Super Mario RPG
Super Mario World
Super Metroid
Super Punch-Out!!
Super Street Fighter II
Yoshi's Cookie
Yoshi's Island
I'm not 100% confident in DKC3, Chrono Trigger, or Mario RPG either. I actually would think those wouldn't be there, but it was actually fairly difficult to get to 30 titles while avoiding licensed games, it being well known/selling, and mostly exclusive.
I know something like Killer Instinct wouldn't be there because of licensing, potentially, and stuff like Mortal Kombat absolutely wouldn't be there due to the content of the games.

My 30 for a SNES Plug-n-Play would be:

Actraiser
Axelay
Chrono Trigger
Contra III: The Alien Wars
Cybernator
Demon's Crest
Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest
Earthbound
Equinox
F-Zero
Final Fantasy II (aka IV)
Final Fight
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
The Legend of the Mystical Ninja
Mortal Kombat II
NBA Jam: Tournament Edition
Pilotwings
R-Type III: The Third Lightning
Samurai Shodown
Secret of Mana
Shadowrun
Street Fighter II Turbo: Hyper Fighting
Super Castlevania IV
Super Ghouls n' Ghosts
Super Mario Kart
Super Mario World
Super Metroid
Super Punch-Out!!
UN Squadron
Wild Guns

This is a personal list as I know some of those titles won't appeal as much to others, and some notable games got deleted out to narrow down to 30. If I were trying to make money off this, I would arrange things differently. However, it they for some reasons released a 30-Game SNES console with these titles, that would be a day one purchase for me.

Solid list. I would buy that, but I would wish I had a few other titles like K.I. Gold, Snowboard Kids, Majora's Mask, and Extreme G. There are a few titles in there that I would trade out for these, but my N64 list would otherwise look very similar.

Ooo, I forgot about Killer Instinct. That's a good one. Not personally a big fan of Major's Mask, and I didn't want to list more than one game per series (though with Mario, there are a few kind-of-sort-of-not-really-in-the-same-series games there).

I think if Nintendo did a SNES or N64 version, they would not have 30 games. I suspect a SNES version would have more like 15 - 20, and N64 12 - 15. Just a guess, there.

When I first read the name of this thread, I thought it was going to be about taking the challenge to beat every single game that comes with the NES Classic in under a year.
PLAY KING'S FIELD.

I would stick to the 30 game selection since that has appealed to people, maybe raise the price to 69.99-79.99 for those versions similar to how they priced the VC games slightly higher. I don't see space or actual game pricing to be a factor.

If they limited the number of games I could see the allure sinking fast and not be worth it as 20 or less games wouldn't be hard to acquire via original methods, so at that price I would want the actual hardware and get actual games (albeit cost more likely).
If you can see the future while remembering the past, you may just have control of the present.
