I didn't enjoy Phantasia as much as I expected to. I never even plowed through the SNES version, but I did finish the GBA version (which does get better eventually as far as battle speed, or I just suffered from Stockholm syndrome). For better or worse, Hearts R is very much a modern Tales game. It's very similar structurally to Vesperia, actually, as far as the battle system goes. Not sure why I'm cottoning to it more; it's probably the blistering pace.

Still playing Dragon Quest II. I am in Rhone, and the game has stopped kidding around. (To say it's difficulty is uneven would be a tremendous understatement.) I don't see nothing wrong with a little grind, however, and in 9-10 levels I should be ready to venture into the final dungeon.

I will say that some of my complaints with entries like Symphonia, Abyss, and Vesperia is that they have way TOO much content. You can wander around for hours at every point in the game hunting for NPC's to give you big ol' sidequests that you might not even be able to do if you wait. As someone who doesn't like to spend 100+ hours on one game, I really appreciated how Graces (at least seemed) to step away from that philosophy. Would you say Hearts does as well?

I have Phantasia and Abyss (3D) as well, but Mario & Luigi 4 is occupying my handheld life atm.
I'm probably going to check out Vesperia next myself.

Tales games sunk time into: 4
Tales games I have beaten: 0

Where will Vesperia land!?!?!?!
Vesperia is one of my favorites, a very close second to Graces f (although my love for Graces is apparently in the minority of fans). The plot starts a bit slow, but the voice work is fantastic, and the characters are dynamic and funny.

I'm curious, what are the others you've tried?
I guess to list them, it's Phantasia, Destiny, Symphonia, and Graces F.

I do own Tales of Destiny II for the PS1, which I think is technically Tales of Legendia or something different with the real sequel being on the PS2... some crazy mess. So I'll probably play that one or Vesperia next.

Eternia is the other PS1 game you have.

What? Bone, no! I don't care if it has a frame rate of 5, you get in there and prove you're the master of Ys!

Can you explain in a little more detail how the game is running badly?

I fixed most issues. Speed was off, had to force it down to 15fps for certain areas to be playable. Used to crash, but seems okay after compatibility tweaks. Needed AppLocale for the install, but that's expected.

Colors are still effed up, especially those that are meant to be "transparent" (the clouds that float over the landscape, for instance). I'll live.

Hope to finish this one, assuming I'm free of issues from this point forward. I also have the physical version of this Ys game I hope to tackle someday:
