This is a home run and perfect for people who don't know how, or want to know how to get these games by other means. I don't even know how to buy a game from the virtual console - I don't want to know. This is perfect. Plug and play - done.

You aren't wrong, but the list of games includes many big names from the NES days. It's not the same as owning everything, but offers a fantastic and extremely convenient way to instantly own a slice of the very best NES games.

That convenience is a big selling point, for me and most likely for a bunch of other people.

The biggest downside, and what might prevent me from buying, is that I already own almost all of those games in other formats (usually Virtual Console) so the added value is novelty, portability, and how it appeals to my collector instincts. Buying just a controller or two might be a better choice.

Now if Nintendo releases an SNES Classic... :D

I was genuinely interested until I saw this. This could have been a golden opportunity for Nintendo to super charge their virtual console implementation but once again they drop the ball...
How is this surprising? Nintendo has spent a lot of time/resources trying to stave off piracy so for many of their consoles. Making the NES Classic a closed, stand-alone system is much easier and safer for them - and probably more appealing for the third parties they are licensing games from.

Disappointing? Sure. But not surprising or particularly unreasonable.

For me no need for the NES PlugNPlay, I own sooo many of the NES pirate import Plugnplays, various multicarts, FC Mobile II and of course a Toaster NES.

Though I already modded a Wiimote to hookup a NES gamepad and any 2600 Joystick, the $10 NES Classic Controller worth getting, maybe two! Checked the online Nintendo Store, no info yet. The U.S. missed out on the Club Nintendo SNES Classic Controller, the NES Classic Controller a nice reprieve!

This picture should be in the OP for a quick look!

Maybe I'm overly cynical but I'm honestly surprised at the inclusion of so many 3rd party games. If you'd told me Nintendo were doing something like this, I'd expect it to be the usual Mario Zelda 1st party Nintendo fare.

In addition, when I first read about this today I wasn't thinking of getting it, but damn, dat controller...

I'd rather have those 30 which contains like...4-5 games i'd have zero interest in, as opposed to 650 games, of which i'd have no interest in 500. It's a great list and has my 3 absolute favorite NES games.

I'm considering buying this because there are a handful of classics on there I still haven't beat yet. Playing them officially using such a cute device is worth it, not to mention the controller itself.

A bigger factor for me though, is supporting the concept. I imagine if this sells well, that Nintendo will release other Classic mini consoles. A SNES Classic would be amazing of course, but I'm open to GBA Classic or N64 Classic for sure.

I also appreciate how accessible this will be for people who don't want to engage with emulation. For example young kids. I'm thinking of buying one of these for my 5 year old niece.

$60 is just way too good for this to me. Even if I owned every single game on there a few times over (and most I do), I still want it!

You can level the same complaint at any plug-n-play that doesn't have a cartridge slot and of the 30 they picked it's a pretty good range that the casual consumer will recognize and want to have.

Ultimately it's two-bucks a game and you get a cute little nostalgic device to play them on.

Ugh, the stupid on the Engadget thread for this... not that I haven't seen the sorts of claims elsewhere, either, but c'mon, guys. Just because you can emulate doesn't mean you're legal. This is a legal way to play 30 NES games (most of which are top-notch!) for $2 a pop. It's a splendid deal for folks that got rid of their NES years ago.

Well I didn't get rid of them, the two I had died on me!

And top loader prices have always been crazy, so I didn't really bother with original NES stuff again.

That's when you bust out the soldering iron. ;)

(Seriously, my original NES from my childhood is starting to go. The video out looks a bit noisy, which means the caps are starting to go. Part of me doesn't want to muck around with the insides of that one, but if I want it to keep working, I'll eventually have no choice.)
