I took these photos to answer a few questions on another site so I thought I'd share them here too. Sega made the Game Gear for years. When they dropped it, they sold the rights to Majesco who continued to make the unit for many years to follow. The Majesco version actually has a better screen and slightly better sound. It isn't compatible with the TV Tuner like the Sega versions, but that's hardly a concern anymore.
The Majesco versions are identified by a black not grey case, a purple not blue start button and white graphics on the screen lens instead of color graphics on the screen lens.
i know the one on the bottom(of the picture) is the one that supports the tv auto tuner that lets you watch tv on your gamegear, if you try it on the other model, i think you will fry your gamegear...so i have heard

Absolute BS. The TV Tuner will not work with the Majesco version, but putting the TV Tuner in the unit and powering it up doesn't hurt anything.
Of course the TV Tuner is pointless anymore since the switch to DTV.
The Majesco units typically sell for a little less but techincally they are the superior versions. The Majesco versions seem harder to find. Most people don't know or care about the differences between the two versions.

In what way exactly?
Better response time, less ghosting, sharper contrast?
I mean I'd be interested in hunting down a Majesco unit if the difference in screen quality is really noticeable between the two versions.

Brighter, sharper image and less smearing on fast moving pictures or objects. The Majesco screens are not an entirely different and better screen, just a noticeably improved Game Gear screen. Majesco had the advantage of addtional years of technological advancements when they produced their version. They are STILL a Game Gear screen though, don't expect anything like a PSP picture or even a Nomad picture.
