Women wear makeup for a variety of different reasons. Some use it for religious reasons, some use it for decorative purposes, some use it for emotional reasons to feel better about themselves and, yes, some use it for societal expectations.
The point you seem to be stuck on is that a woman can't call herself a feminist unless she's not wearing makeup, effectively 'sticking it to the man' or some such bull. I suspect you also think they all go out and burn their bras and refuse to shave their legs. But one of the things feminists fight for, among the slew of other equal rights, is to not be judged or ridiculed for what they say based on their appearance. The basis of feminism is the fight for equality, to make people look around themselves and take note of how women (
and minorities
and men) are treated, how it's different than they treat others, why it's wrong and how it should be changed. What you wear or how you look has absolutely no bearing on those beliefs whatsoever. None. At all.
Not agreeing with what a woman says is one thing. You can disagree with them on philosophical, or ideological or political, or any number of other other reasons based on what she said. But to then include a critique of her appearance just to bolster your own argument? Because she doesn't look how
you expect her to while disregarding what
she wants to do with her own damn body. That's exactly the kind of mindset feminism is fighting against.
And I hate to tell you this, but many well known feminists, including Naomi Wolf and Gloria Steinem, wear makeup.
A visual aid.
And another.
Hell, in the early days of the feminist movement, Steinem had the same problem as Sarkeesian, having to put up with people more concerned about her looks than what she was saying. The pendulum should be swinging in the opposite direction, not perpetually stuck at zero.
But by all means, explain to me how these very famous feminists, who themselves wear makeup, are in fact, not feminists.

Again, I think it is an attempt to maintain some sort of position in the hierarchical pecking order in a sexist preconceived hierarchy of men on top and women on the bottom.
It's that alpha male bs I was trying to get at earlier (I was at work). Society teaches men, essentially from birth, that women are weaker than they are, that they need to be saved, they're not as smart, etc. So from the get-go, they're told that women are a notch or more below them on the societal totem pole. So when a woman does better than them at something, it screws with their ingrained world view, even if they don't consciously realize it, and they lash out in an attempt to disarm them back to their perceived 'place.'
Of course, the anonymity of the internet doesn't help and probably only makes matters worse, as a lot of the aholes who do that type of shit wouldn't be caught dead saying those same comments to someone in the same room (they know their mummies would likely kill them), but that's another issue.
As for Sarkeesian... Do you really think anyone would suddenly think she had a more valid point if she recorded her videos first thing after getting out of bed and looking all dog-faced with a hangover?
Even if she did do that, she'd still be fucking ridiculed for her looks. That's part of my problem with the whole discussion. She's damned by one side if she does, and she's damned by the other if she don't. Her looks should have never been part of the discussion to begin with.
