The good news: It's Kirby! The bad news... wait, is another Kirby bad news? I don't think so!
Seriously, though, if you didn't like Kirby games in the mainline series, and in particular, Return to Dreamland and Triple Deluxe, you won't like this one. On the flip side, if you love mainline Kirby games like I do, this is a great one. My total time to get all cubes and mess around with the 3D mode and about five minutes of Meta Knightmare mode was 9h03m. So about the same as Triple Deluxe. If you're going for a complete sticker set, it will take a bit longer. I ended up missing ten of the rare ones along the way. It's pretty much the same as before with Triple Deluxe and its keychains.
The game looks nice, and the 3D use is once again spectacularly well done. Seriously, you can play without 3D, but there's enough use of background and foreground, and attacks that come from there, that it really helps you parse the screen better with 3D enabled. Soundtrack is the usual stuff.
The mech suit is great. Granted, it controls a lot like Kirby, but it is also significantly more powerful. It's a much cooler way to make you overpowered that doesn't feel quite as "on rails" as prior games. The mech suit even gets used in some puzzles. Sadly, it's not nearly as complex as it used to be to unlock everything. I remember Kirby's Adventure requiring some very deft maneuvering to hang on to a power to unlock the secret area in stages. This time, the power you need is usually just either right there or very close by.
There are also some shooter sequences, and some ramp/racing sequences. They both serve to break up the action well. And while I won't spoil it, the final battle shooting sequence is pretty great!
There are some minor performance quirks, as the framerate tends to drop in certain areas. It's not game-breaking, but it does make me wonder if it runs better on a New 3DS. I also don't remember the performance in Triple Deluxe, so it might not be that different. Pretty sure it's the exact same engine, regardless.
Anyway, definitely got my money's worth, although ten-ish hours of content might be a bit steep for $40 if you're not absolutely desperate for a new Kirby game right now. I should also note that I found myself having more fun when I paced myself, playing a stage or two before bed. Gave me more time to savor it.
