PS2 Deus Ex music in PC Version.. Can it be done?

Post by optmusprimenumber »

Like the title says. I have an ISO of the PS2 game but the music is in an unknown format and there are more tracks than in the PC game. I thought it might be a matter of changing the format and moving the tracks into the music folder, but not so. I'm guessing there's other steps to take. I have XP and Linux, if someone knows about one OS having a better answer than the other.

this seems helpful: http://soundtrackcentral.com/how-do-you ... ter/tp2226

can you let us know the file format of the audio for each version?

The PC version has umx files. The PS2 one has something else, all the extensions for the track files are 3 digit numbers. For each track the PC version has the PS2 version has a folder, for the most part with more than one track in them. Named, for example, AREA51.000, AREA52.001, AREA51.002, etc

After checking out that link I'm thinking I have sequenced audio files and might be shit outa luck.

I was going to ask if you knew the umx/MOD tracks for the PC version are dynamic, with multiple "sections" per track, but I have no idea what you're talking about here so you must know.

Had to use ModPlug I think it was to play the umx files and explore all parts of the tracks. I don't know if a full game rip is out, but a lot of the dialogue/interlude tracks can be found on youtube last I checked.

That said I really don't remember any extra tracks in the PS2 version... I mean have you actually heard anything or maybe have some links? I do know the PS2 version had the CGI intro (which cuts a lot actually) and the CGI endings, with improved character models, but there being any extra music is new to me.

D'oh. I did not know about the dynamic track action. I'm gonna go ahead and guess that the multiple tracks on the PS2 version are the "sections" you mentioned. Nothing works for me! lol oh well.. thanks for the helps

UMX files are similar to MOD, S3M, and IT style music files, meaning they are not pre-recorded tracks but sequenced tracks.

As someone who has played Deus Ex probably 10+ times and first played the PS2 version a lot back when it was new, I'm glad I questioned you here haha.

These might be the few of many tracks that might be confusing you:

(the "Conversation" tracks are so good!)

117 tracks, potentially the full OST:

Like I mentioned above, try ModPlug or some kind of MOD tracker software if you have the PC umx files, with that you should be able to check out all the parts of the tracks and such. Unreal Gold / Tournament used the MOD format too, but I think full complete rips of those OST's are out there in mp3's.

It was thanks to composer Alexander Brandon that I even got interested in Unreal a few years ago and discovered there was a campaign. If you dig this sound format, it's definitely worth playing if you haven't. Probably one of the most atmospheric games I've ever played, even from just playing it a few years ago. I wish the MOD format lasted longer.
