original Paranormal Activity

Thats about it. Every other horror movie Ive seen may have been decent, but simply not scary. I have a soft spot for the original Hellraiser though.
I'm 100% asking this not as a dick - have you watched a lot of horror movies? I think Blair Witch is great, at least historically. I think Session 9 is a really good movie. I think Paranormal was... ok. Event Horizon I have never understood - but I seem to be in the minority on that one. So whatever. But I mean, there are A LOT of horror movies that I'd rank as "great" way way before any of the four you listed. I'm curious if you're just not big on the genre, or you just have really particular taste?

I love the original Hellraiser, though. Love it.

And yes, TSTR - Halloween is still scary and perfect.

Watched Spring Breakers again tonight. What a glorious mess of debauchery and neon. Cult classic material for sure.

It was long overdue for me, but I finally ended up watching Dredd at my own discretion.

Yes.

List your favorites, we probably just have different tastes.

I prefer unseen psychological horror, over say; stalker serial killer or grotesque monster horror. I find grotesque monster horror to be amusing, but not scary. Stalker serial killer horror bores me entirely.

my favorites? Um. Damn. Put me on the spot. This is like when that reporter asks Rob in High Fidelity what his top 5 favorite songs are and he's like "you mean in the club or when I'm at home or...?" Haha.

I default to The Evil Dead as being my favorite horror movie of all time. Slashers are my favorite sub-genre, though and I've seen literally hundreds. Besides that? Some horror movies that come to mind right this moment that I love would be...

The Burning
Cabin Fever
Candy Man
Dagon
Friday The 13th (series... my favorite series)
Ginger Snaps
Halloween
Hellraiser
Hostel II
House Of 1,000 Corpses
House Of The Devil
The Innkeepers
It Follows
Lords Of Salem
Night Of The Demons
A Nightmare On Elm Street
Return Of The Living Dead
Scream
Texas Chainsaw Massacre
The Thing

I don't even know though. I'm blanking on so much shit. Horror is my favorite genre and has been for many many years and I've watched so much (good and bad) that's it's tough to come up with any sort of list (good or bad) without deep thought.

holy shit The First Avenger was fantastic. I didn't know what to expect. I thought the origin story might be the first third of the movie with the rest taking place in current day. Instead... it was brilliant. The tie-ins to Stark and Odin and SHIELD and... just everything. As a kid I rented Captain America on VHS a bunch of times back in the day. To see a movie like this that just really does right by the character... I loved it.

Which is a genre I don't care for, so there's the core difference in our tastes here.

Of the movies you listed, I did enjoy:

Cabin Fever
House Of 1,000 Corpses
A Nightmare On Elm Street
The Thing

The reason I listed the other movies earlier as my favorites, is that those were horror movies that actually managed to frighten me. I prefer for horror movies to be legit scary, but that is a very rare experience for me personally. Jump scares, ugly monsters, slasher gore, serial killer stalkers, etc. just doesn't do the trick for me. But a screwed up psychological situation combined with a menace you can't even see... that does the trick.

I think jump scares are cheap for the most part. Have you seen The Innkeepers or House Of The Devil or Lords Of Salem? If you like kind of slow burner/mindfuck stuff, you might really enjoy those.

Have you seen Jacob's Ladder?

(aka the real Silent Hill movie).

I believe Texas Chainsaw Massacre is super legit too. Watched it for the first time last year and was quite shocked at how amazing it was. The musical sound scape and style it went for was very much ahead of its time, with like this droning dark ambiance I'd have a hard time finding in other 70's films. The plot concept is amusing on paper, but the execution of the film was subtle mastery. Just like Jacob's Ladder. My kind of style for legit, scary stuff.

I'm a huge sucker for slashers though, Jason's a rockstar. I'm not that interested in Halloween though, even the second one felt pretty lame to me. 3 was amusing because it was like a horrible James Bond ripoff or something. But beyond that I could careless, Myers doesn't have amusing iconic character and personality like Jason, Freddy, and even Pinhead (for better or worse) end up having.

It's also like a bonus feature to look into the drug and conspiracy that was explored in Jacob's Ladder. Check that one out ASAP Exhuminator.

Cool. Be sure to check out:

The Shining (1980)
The Babadook (2014)
The Haunting (1963)
The Innocents (1961)
The Changeling (1980)
Burnt Offerings (1976)

Based on what I know about you, I suspect you will also enjoy:

The Last Exorcism (2010)
Beyond the Black Rainbow (2010)

Oh yeah...and Honeymoon. You will probably like that one too.

Also, noise, be sure to read And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie sometime. It is basically the best slasher film ever disguised as a classic mystery novel. I think you'll love it. (As long as you don't skip to the end and spoil it!)
