for my money one of the most effective violent horror films is Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer

I may have mentioned it before, but I still believe that the best Horror Movie of all time is The Shining. That's not really a controversial or surprising opinion I suppose. I just love psychological horror movies like that.
Silence of the Lambs was also great pychological horror - really got into the mind of the killers.
The first Hellraiser film (and to some extent the second film) is great psycho-sexual horror with an emphasis on S&M.
Gacy (while not necessarily being a great film) succeeded in showing the mind, motives, and method of the killer.
The Others was a great psychological horror, albeit a bit of a slow burner. The period piece reminds me of Henry James's "Turn of the Screw" gothic ghost story novella. The audience sees the plot twist coming from a mile away, but watching the revelation dawn on the protagonist is satisfying.
An American Haunting impressed me with a great script and solid acting despite negative critical reviews. This is the kind of movie that sticks with you after you watch it.
I would be remiss to neglect to mention Alfred Hitchcock's 1960 masterpiece, Psycho which influenced countless horror films and continues to influence film makers today.

Samson, have you seen Jacob's Ladder or Session 9 yet? I think you would appreciate them.

Is this Anton Yelchin's unforeseen swan song? Not sure, since there's a new Star Trek coming out this year afaik. The film itself is well-made and will you keep on the edge of your seat.

Re: What was the last movie you've seen?
The only horror movies I`ve seen that I consider truly great:
Session 9
original Blair Witch
original Paranormal Activity
Event Horizon
Thats about it. Every other horror movie Ive seen may have been decent, but simply not scary. I have a soft spot for the original Hellraiser though.

I just got back from seeing Swiss Army Man. I loved it! It somehow grapples with the extremes of ridiculousness and heartfelt sincerity really well and manages to be SUPER FUNNY and SUPER TOUCHING.
