So my component to d-terminal adapter arrived so I could hook my Genesis using the HD Retrovision cables to my X-RGB (as my component switch is already full). I decided to first try with Sonic CD (and get a twofer, as I just picked up a replacement copy for my damaged copy). Something that was weird was that the music channel was very soft while the sound effects were normal volume. Is that normal? Am I missing some sort of config? The Sonic 2 cart sounds perfectly fine.

The setup is a model 2 Genesis with a model 2 Sega CD and a 32x.

Indeed. Metroidvanias are fine and all but the design ethos that goes into level based games is a lot different and underappreciated these days.

As relating to the Sega CD... is it different from how Sonic CD normally sounds? I've always thought the sound effects were tuned too high compared to the music.

Relating to Metroidvanias, I love 'em, but I have a feeling that a Mega Man-style game might do pretty well right about now. Just sayin'.

Other random thoughts: NVIDIA graphics drivers are evil. Good grief did I fight with it the other day. The installer just would not run. I did everything, using Driver Cleaner to remove, manually deleting registry entries, renaming the folders in Program Files, all the stuff suggested. Nothing worked.

Until, of course, I finally got smart and enabled logging. Was having trouble writing some sort of database to C:\ProgramData\NVidia, so I went in and renamed that folder, too. And it worked like a charm. Go figure! (What's even worse is that I'd clearly had this problem before, because I had a renamed version of the lone file in that folder from a year or two ago, so my long-term memory clearly malfunctioned, or I've blocked out those painful memories. Maybe this will serve as a record in the future.)

Anyway, that now means two things: Victor Vran will actually run on my laptop now (yay!), although I have to reduce the rendering resolution to 50% to keep it from crashing; and I can now enable hardware acceleration in Firefox without immediately crashing the browser. Goodbye, Chrome. :)

That makes me feel better. The videos I'd seen of gameplay online had the music balanced well with the sound effects but they were clearly emulator videos; I'm guessing the original hardware doesn't play the CD music tracks as loud as the digital sound effects, but various emulators correct that.

Is your X-RGB a mini? Why use component cables with the Genesis?

I guess the SFX are a little bit louder than the BGM in Sonic CD, but I usually found the audio levels to be close, at least. Are you taking the audio out of the 32X, or from the RCA jacks on the Sega CD?

Yeah, I actually use Firefox at work, and the only reason I didn't use Firefox at home (well, partly, I still used it for random browsing) was because my machine would stutter on videos when blown up to full screen while running at 1920x1080. I've never really liked Chrome that much, but I'd rather use it than IE.

Definitely got AdBlock Plus installed. :)

This video sounds about right for Sonic CD. The sound effects are pretty darn loud.

X-RGB3. And why use component? Because previously I was using composite and it looked like shit. And this is audio coming out of the 32x.

I was just curious why you opted for component instead of RGB, with an X-RGB.

I would try the audio from the Sega CD instead, if you can do that.
