There's a workaround for getting the music going in the GOG version. It involves you downloading the tracks from elsewhere though. I don't remember the specifics but I managed to get the music in my game. I think a thread on the GOG forums instructed me on it.

The link I just posted has the files that should work with the GOG release too:

I'll probably have a nice hefty review up of everything Quake 1-2 once I wrap up the last two mission packs of each. It's been fun jumping back and forth between Q1 and Q2, now I've been playing both Dissolution Of Eternity and Ground Zero back to back off and on.
It seemed like Popo, Steam, GOG, and other random places didn't have many good things to say about Ground Zero. I can kind of see why, the first level right off the bat throws a huge assortment of enemies at you when you've barely got anything, and in almost every single level there's dozen of spots where enemies have the vertical advantage. Cheap level design and the difficulty were the complaints I've seen and it seems true. It seems doable as I continue to get better with all the weapons, but yeah.
All that said, it's still cool so far and I can probably manage. The short version of the review is that this journey has been amazing, and both games are just so slightly different enough that it's been really fun and not tiresome playing them together.
Are there good fanmade mission packs for either game? Is there a community out there for it like Doom's megawads and such? I keep thinking a Doom episode or something remade in either Q1 or Q2 would be pretty cool.

Honestly, I would have forgiven Ground Zero for its beginning as being a callback to the shareware days where you'd start an episode with the basic pistol and have to ration things if it weren't for the few new utterly cheap enemies. Especially those turrets. There was just a lot in the level design designed to kill you if you were unaware and trash your HP if you were aware.

One thing I've gotten sick of is the earthquake/explosion shaky moments with level design that'll have you falling in lava!
The Reckoning was really good outside of the first few levels (never a huge fan of sewers/caves in Q2). It felt like a natural/official extension of the main game in terms of quality and some of the new enemies, while frustrating at times, were pretty cool. Some fun levels later on in space when they changed up the gravity.
I cruised through the first episode of Dissolution Of Eternity. I found it to be one of the easiest portions of Q1 for me, maybe because I'm better with the weapons by this point, but the large addition of new ammo types for upgraded versions of most of the weapons, made ammo very abundant. So item management wasn't a worry at all with this one. The fire nail gun is my favorite.
Episode 2 seems to ramp it up big time though, the first level was no joke.

I like that trend. I'll be getting back into Skyrim when the remaster comes out for instance.
