Anton Yelchin's Jeep Was Included In Rollaway Recall Linked To 41 Injuries
True, but it essentially amounts to the driver leaving them in something other than Park when they exit the vehicle, and not setting the emergency brake on top of that. While not to diminish them, that's 41 accidents reported from it out of over half a million vehicles. Not exactly a common problem.
The main thing that's of note is simply that the shift lever is kind of like an arcade stick or something. It moves, but it just comes back to center, so you have to pay attention to which of the letters are actually lit up (or look at the instrument cluster). (I have a 2015 Grand Cherokee, I got the recall/warning letter a while back, etc). They've since replaced it with a little rotary thing on the 2016s.
Admittedly, it
is easy to over/undershoot P/R/N/DS, but it's also not that hard to get used to, and it does have a manual e-brake (the pedal kind, but Chrysler has been doing those for 20+ years). The only time I've "had trouble" figuring out what setting it was on was with very bright direct sunlight on the shifter, which made the LED lighting hard to discern without putting my hand over it (or looking at the instrument cluster).
Presumably, they're just doing a software update to make it automatically switch to Park if a door is opened when the car isn't moving. Far as I know, that's common for other vehicles with similar shifter setups.
