it was a pretty easy transition for me to make, and one I'm very glad that I did. I still use a normal controller for a handful of games, mostly those that truly require analog control, such as super monkey ball.

Need FreeMCboot? I'll install it on your PS2 Memory Card for free if you cover postage both ways.
Consoles: I have too much stuff
Arcade: No seriously, I have too much stuff. Someone grab a shovel and dig me out of my basement.

I use to play on control pads until I bought a Hori fighting stick 2 last year and now I play games better in the arcade which is a great thing. It took a while to get use to the half-circle moves and 180 movements.Using a arcade stick is kind of like playing DDR or Guitar Hero, once you learn the technique you don't forget it.I don't play any fighters on controls anymore once I got the arcade stick.

Pros: better control over movements, played like its suppose to be,easy to press buttons in a row, play better at the arcade(if the computer isn't cheap or someone is better than you  )
Cons: price, takes time for technique to develop, sometimes bulky & needs a flat surface
Systems: Sega Dreamcast(x2), Sega Genesis(x2), Sega Saturn, Sega CD, Genmobile (portable Genesis), FC Twin, PSX, PS2(x2), GBA, SP, Xbox 360, N64, Showcase Arcade

I still haven't tried out my PS3 stick with Söldner-X, but I have been using it for all things fighting these days. I originally picked it up because I found that I wasn't utilizing all my attacks in SSF2THDR. I would end up only mashing the HP/HK, and getting rocked by people poking me with the lighter attacks. So I got the stick to give me a better button layout.

Having played most of my life on a quality d-pad (SNES) it was a bit of an adjustment. However, I consider myself to be pretty proficient with both now. I still don't see the stick having an advantage over the d-pad (ignoring action buttons), but the buttons make up for it. Not even the nice SF4 fightpad can quite make up for it, as you're still just rocking your thumb on the six buttons, instead of having your whole right hand hovering over your attacks.

I find it much easier to play most fighting games on an arcade stick. As a long time fan of Street Fighter, I've often found myself doing well while playing on a stick at home and losing each and every round on a friend's 360. Most importantly, since I'm so used to it, there's no learning curve when I play people in the arcade.

Besides fighting games and shmups, i always wondering if an arcade stick is better for 2d platformers like Mario, Megaman, Castlevania etc.

When i get a stick (hopefully soon) i will definitely try this out in PC emulators.

To be fair, the 360 d-pad is complete ass, so it isn't a fair comparison.
