I went and saw it with my wive at 10:30PM last night and I am not sure if I enjoyed the movie or not.
My indecision is not because I am an avid comic book reader and a fan of the excellent piece of work that is the Watchmen graphic novel, its not because I feel the movie didn't do the comic justice, and it's not because the movie was great... I can't deiced because sitting next to my wife and I was a 10 year-old boy.
This movie was violent, and I mean real violent - the kind of violence where blood splatters with every punch and bones pop out of the skin with almost every break. Not only was the violence level inappropriate for a 10 year-old the sex scenes were pretty graphic. This young boy came to the movie with his grandparents and they stayed the whole time. You would think after the "rape" scene they would have packed up and left. The kid more than once gasped, covered his mouth as if he was going to puke, and mumbled the word "gross" with a quivering voice.
I had a horrible time last night and it's not because I didn't like the movie... hell I didn't pay attention to the movie and still have no idea if I liked it or not. My indecision is because I paid more attention to the kid than the movie. I spent the whole time feeling bad and wondering what kind of nightmares his grandparents were creating for him.
My heart goes out to that kid - he definitely looked and acted as if he will be scared for life... as for me I now have to shell out another $20 so I can accurately express my opinion on this movie.

Re: Anybody else excited about The Watchmen?
I didn't think that the movie did the comic justice. I saw it with my girlfriend who didn't read the comic and afterwords she confirmed what I was thinking. The back story of the watchmen as a group gets blown through in the opening credits so you never figure it out if you don't already know.
That and I got tired of the floppy blue penis scenes. What was the point of it? I understand that he doesn't need clothes or even care about them but I got that the first time. Why bother showing so many floppy blue penis scenes?
Last of all the action scenes were so far overblown that they were confusing. None of them have super powers except Dr. Blueballs so why show them doing stuff that's nearly superhuman? Them just being regular people who decided to help is a big part of the back story but you would never know since everyone can break bones with a punch and throw people through marble counter tops.

Re: Anybody else excited about The Watchmen?
Just seen it.
All I have to say is. Meh.
Didn't care for it. Didn't give a shit about the characters. Didn't give a shit about the boring story. Far too much of Dr. Manhatten's cock on screen. I mean seriously. We get it, he doesn't care for human rituals like wearing clothes anymore, he's 'above' all that but C'MON! Do we really need to see his fucking flaccid cock 16 times in the fucking movie?
The sex scenes were just utterly pointless. Completely over the top just like the gratuitous nudity in 300. I don't mind nudity at all in a film, if it's relevant to the plot and it's tastefully done then I'm all for it. The only time I think the nudity was called for was the dream sequence. All the other times it was absolutely pointless.
The action scenes were over the top. These guys aren't superheroes... They're regular folk who felt like they needed to sort shit out because nobody else was. They don't have super powers. The only one who does is Dr. Manhatten. The only person who I felt was treated properly was Rorschach, he was intimidating but not overly powerful, the way he dealt with adversaries made a lot more sense. The other guys just felt like they were an excuse for putting gross out moves like the arm break and neck twists just for the sake of having it in there. They're not superheroes, they're just monsters.
Personally I would have felt the film would have achieved it's goal within 30 minutes if they had just nuked the planet straight away. Why the fuck not? If the whole point was to incriminate Dr. Manhatten why didn't they just do it straight away. 2 hours of that movie is wasted on pointless sub plots that mean absolutely fucking zero by the end of the film.
Oh yeah. Sorry for the spoilers... I'm doing you a favour though, don't bother with this film, it fucking stinks. Big time.

I think you guys are homophobes, as were everyone in my audience, as they snickered and whispered like a bunch of 12 year olds, every time a penis was on screen. They weren't focusing on the cock, people. They weren't zooming in on the fucking thing, full-framing it, giving it dialog. It wasn't a god damn co-star. It's all you who make a big deal out of it. The cock wasn't taking up valuable run-time, like the pointless sex scenes were. He's just naked, and that's who he is.
Re: Anybody else excited about The Watchmen?
I've got no problem with the cock. The cock is fine. I just don't see why it needed to be in every shot with Dr. Manhatten. Why was it necessary? I've seen less cock in porn films for fucks sake.
There was snickering all around at the theater I went to also. Highly annoying, especially the fucking chavs that kept kicking my chair.
I fucking hate cinemas.

Re: Anybody else excited about The Watchmen?
After distilling 'Watchmen' over night on gas mark 5 I think I came off as a bit harsh on my original opinion. However, the film still has plenty of glaring flaws. Certain characters were over-acted, some not at all. Rorschach was brilliant and his scenes are probably worth the price of admission alone. I think I went in expecting Watchmen to be the anti-hero film that everybody wanted. It came close but just like Dreiberg, became impotent just when it was supposed to get going.
I think I might wait for the ultra extended uber cut to see if it manages to elevate itself in my eyes. I don't think I'm going to bother seeing it again in the cinema unlike a few of my buddies that saw it with me.
However I don't know if anybody noticed but when Dreiberg accesses the pyramid floppy disk there's a folder called 'boys'. (If you haven't read the comic, there's quite a few hints that Ozymandias/Adrian Veidt is gay).
OH yeah, and that fucking keyboard! It seems odd that they went through all the trouble to make the film period and have no anachronisms in there and they make the PC look like it was straight out of the 80s but then have a brand spanking new black keyboard... *sigh*

Here is a good non-review with many pertinent points, both good and bad, about the movie:

It's sad how true much of it is. I like the Batman vs. Superman bit.
