Does anyone else remember programmable control pads?

Does anyone else remember programmable control pads?

Post by Scooter »

Like these two for Genesis/MD?:

Back in the day I bought a copy of the one pictured on the bottom. I was struggling with Splatterhouse 2 and found that a particular combo move was almost necessary to clear some levels but it was devilishly difficult to pull off, at least for me. So I bought a programmable pad to help me pull off that combo anytime I needed with ease. It really did work well. Years later after I hadn't used the pad for quite I while I traded it in at a local used game store.

Recently as the collecting bug bit me I found I really wanted my old programmable pad back. I then found it pretty darn difficult to actually locate one. I got lucky recently and got these two in separate purchases for about $15 each. They were NIB and sealed so the price seemed faily reasonable for virgin plastic! Of course now they are no longer sealed because I intend to use them when I'm not using my favorite Genesis controller, a well worn TurboTouch 360 (but I have a NIB spare copy stored away!).

You can see that they were made by the same company but that over the span of time between the first one (bottom one in the photo) and the second one (the one in the top of the photo) the company changed names, and I can't blame them. What company would want to go by the name of STD? ;)

Have you ever seen the ones for the Super Famicom? Those things were crazy. Some were basically like playing an emulator (i.e. slow-downs etc).

I still have my old Asciipad for my SNES. Turbo, auto turbo, and slo-mo. Of course, in those days slo-mo was just hitting start a ton of times. It got kind of amusing in Street Fighter II, since you would just continue to hear "FightFightFightFightFightFightFightFight".

I had the one on the top. Can't say I ever knew anything about programming it or what it did.

I had both of those!

There are two SG ProgramPads at one of the local game shops here, almost picked one up for nostalgia's sake. I don't remember it working very well though. I tried to program MK fatalities into the controller and I don't think they ever worked.

i had the bottom one but the packaging was different. it touted the mortal kombat logo and had a picture of a kid zapping goro with the pad on the front. it was awesome.

My friend used to have a really good SNES one we'd use for Mortal Kombat II. It had the fatalities for our favorite characters programmed including the most complex one - Shang Tsung -> Liu Kang -> Dragon
I don't think we ever used it for anything but fatalities.
