I think that, to an extent, the purpose of the main numbered entries has become essentially to showcase their best efforts. Not cranking out the same thing over and over, but at least trying to create something that's representative of the state of the genre, if not push it forward.

Obviously, that's probably got a "for better or worse" caveat in there, though most of it is subjective. Part of the problem of branding so much stuff under the name is that fans expect everything to be like the entries they particularly got attached to.

'course, having played SE MMOs for as long as I have...I have a lot of negative things I could say about them as developers too  I think there's a lot of upper management that aren't as savvy about modern development and such. There have usually been vast, effective changes in XI (and the rebuild of XIV) when the younger folks have been allowed to step in and run things.

They probably still make bank on the brand anyway. XI was, at least at one point, the most profitable game they'd ever made, and likely fueled a lot of other projects. XIV is probably doing that now, etc.

Nope. Real hardcore gamers know that $350 buys a lot of Super Famicom Atari 7800 Vectrex games...
I fixed it for you, Jordy.

Ugh yeah, I still hate that the MMO's are part of the main line. I even love XII, but think that one as well would have been better called Vagrant Story 2 or something. Just slapping the name on there.

On that random note though, XIV looks pretty legit and I hear it's even good solo? I generally hate MMO's but if I were to play one again, that one looks way cooler than the norm to me.

The urge to play some Ys is creeping back..... It's been like eight months or so.

I grabbed Ys Origin on GOG.com last night. Now I own a physical copy, as well as Steam and GOG.com versions. Excessive?

I do the same thing with Wing Commander games including all the ports I can get my hands on.

Well you haven't bought the Humble Bundle version yet, so you've not quite reached excessive at this point.

Haha tempting!

What's wild is that I don't actually own the original Japanese game (my physical copy is the Chinese-language version by Typhoon games).

It's part of why the "flagship" mentality works in my mind. XI and XIV are MMOs because of how big and influential that genre is/was when they were released. Same as why XV will be more open-world, etc.

XIV is basically a meld of Guild Wars 2 and World of Warcraft, with phenomenal production values. It's very much a theme park MMO though, with a constantly climbing gear level/etc. Things that are built for doing solo, you can do solo (you kinda have to). You can't play all of it purely solo though, as the mission lines require group dungeons. You can queue up in Duty Finder to get auto-grouped, but it's still grouping.
To me, that makes it not exactly good "solo", though it does make it easy to go do stuff casually if you're okay getting thrown in with random people (I am not).

While I'm biased, I say XI is actually the more soloable one now. It still gives very little information in game and all, but there have been a ton of adjustments and additions over the years that make it far more accessible. With major content updates done, it'd actually be feasible to do most/all of the story content without really interacting with anyone (granted, it'd mean needing to spend time gearing up better for a handful of fights).
