I think that, to an extent, the purpose of the main numbered entries has become essentially to showcase their best efforts. Obviously, that's probably got a "for better or worse" caveat in there, though most of it is subjective. Part of the problem of branding so much stuff under the name is that fans expect everything to be like the entries they particularly got attached to.
'course, having played SE MMOs for as long as I have...I have a lot of negative things I could say about them as developers too
They probably still make bank on the brand anyway. XI was, at least at one point, the most profitable game they'd ever made, and likely fueled a lot of other projects. XIV is probably doing that now, etc.
