I have to do the same thing for some games... especially Final Fantasy IX back in the day. And even though I loved VIII, all the side questing was really sapping my enjoyment, so around the end of disc 3, I made the push to the end.

I don't know how tough the encounters are there, but I'm guessing you can grind a little bit in the last area. I don't remember it being too bad, but I was playing the GBA version.
I've been murdering the last few bosses, except the one that binds the swords where I won with only one character left alive...I don't know if it's the translation (I don't like DeJap's "bawdy" retelling) or most likely the random battles but I get bored easily with it.
I'm just not sure random battle RPG's are for me. I like a good story and the random battling just becomes boring for me when it's constantly interrupting my exploration.

I dropped Phantasia randomly myself at some point for some reason. Is the encounter rate in the SNES version crazy? I can't remember, but it's definitely insane in Tales of Destiny 1.

Frankly I'm a lot more interested in Star Ocean 5 now before I play another Tales game.

Yeah, the random encounter rate in ToD is ridiculous. Look, I don't mind random battles, but when they're that often, it's just a sign that the dev likes their battle system too much.

Thankfully, the Tales series eventually got away from that.

Still kinda trucking through Baten Kaitos. Finished up the last of the two big sidequests in the game, as well as all other story stuff before the final dungeon. I'm just so close to the end, I figure I might as well finish it.

Summer is coming and that means I have to play rpgs again, thinking either Xenoblade or P4G, or both, not so short rpgs though.

It's not as bad as something like Lufia which became maddening towards the end. The usual JRPG upgrade that you always seem to get too late for it to be fun helps with it alot.

I just finished the treasure hunting quest so I'm extra equipped for Dhaos castle but i think I'll leave Moira Gallery and close in on beating the game instead.

I've been playing Surging Aura for the Mega Drive, and I'm quite enjoying it. It's ATB, so I wish there was more of a menu for selecting actions in battle, instead of cycling through icons in an ellipse, but it hasn't been too much of a struggle, yet. A groups of pirates attacked me on the high seas, and I beat them up so hard that they became my friends. After they chauffeured me to port, they lined up in a way that the boss was standing in front of three of his underlings, and I couldn't talk with the one directly behind him. I went all the way around the stern of the boat, to get behind them, and the pirate was so impressed with my determination that he rewarded me with a healing item. It's not much, but I love little details like this.

This game is so disgustingly beautiful that it almost makes me sick, and does things that I wasn't even sure the Genesis could do. I could stare off into the vista landscape backgrounds in the battle screens forever, if I weren't forced to end them as quickly as possible. They are flat backgrounds, but artistically, there's very nice depth to them. The color palettes are pretty intense, too. Even the overworld looks pretty (relatively speaking). Also, the main character is a dude, but he really looks like a girl, and everyone loves him. I think I want to date him--, which is probably what the developers (or at least the artist) was hoping for. A princess (Clare) joined my party, and she might be the most bad ass princess ever. I dig her, but I think she's going to be replaced later by another swordsman (Silk) who seems at least equally badass, just not a princess (I don't think).

I'm really shocked that game wasn't localized.
