Technically it'll be five subs, since the mains are 4ways. The subs run at a stomach punch level, just enough to jostle stuff, but not enough to knock stuff off the walls.TSTR wrote:add the Polk, keep the Sonys, remove all other speakers

But you could blow a crater in the ground if you wanted, right?

If I built some pro audio subs, yes. A buddy of mine has an AV rental company, and we built these subs that they are 4ft tall, 4x 20inch drivers firing through a specific system. At 3/4th power from 100ft away they modulate your voice. And we built four of them.
I wish I could just do pro audio for the home, but not this time around. I just dont know home system components.

You dont know the half of it. He has been designing a home theater for the last few years in autoCAD. The subs are built into a fake subflooring that folds the waves over ontop of themselves so every base note vibrates the floor like the Trex in Jurassic Park. It is a hybrid infinite baffle subwoofer system built into the floor. His proof of concept build vibrated itself apart when he put it through a bass test that went from 4db to 120db in waves.
When I get my next house, we are installing a smaller version of that, aswell as stadium seating.

From an audio engineering standpoint, that's not exactly a good thing... but I'm still impressed.fastbilly1 wrote:His proof of concept build vibrated itself apart when he put it through a bass test that went from 4db to 120db in waves.

Quick waves, make it sound better?samsonlonghair wrote:From an audio engineering standpoint, that's not exactly a good thing... but I'm still impressed.fastbilly1 wrote:His proof of concept build vibrated itself apart when he put it through a bass test that went from 4db to 120db in waves.
He setup a bass test to go the range quickly to see if it would destroy the prototype. Not exactly a real world test but he over engineers everything more than I do.

I'm not really sure what you're asking here. Is that a rhetorical question?fastbilly1 wrote:Quick waves, make it sound better?samsonlonghair wrote:From an audio engineering standpoint, that's not exactly a good thing... but I'm still impressed.fastbilly1 wrote:His proof of concept build vibrated itself apart when he put it through a bass test that went from 4db to 120db in waves.

Quick waves mean a higher frequency - the opposite of being all about dat bass... all treble.
Decibels don't measure the quickness of sound waves. It's a measure of the ratio of sound pressure or the ratio of voltage to a given reference (for our intents and purposes this basically means volume). I think that decibels can be misleading because it's a logarithmic scale, and there's at least three ways to measure sound that all use decibels (three that I know of - maybe more I don't know of) depending on your point of reference. Four decibels is quieter than a pin drop and one hundred twenty decibels is as loud as a thunder clap.
Sorry if any of this comes across as condescending. I know you're a smart guy. I was basically just making a joke that shaking ones prototype to pieces isn't necessarily a good thing, but it makes for a cool story.

Re: Audiophile, Budgetphile, and Dontgiveaphile thread.
Sorry, I confused my terminology and I guess did not tell the whole story. He created a bass test for the purpose of shaking the thing apart to test how strong the design was. His original idea was to build it into the subfloor, but local codes told him that was not going happen so he decided to build a fake floor. Before he installs it in his house he built a scale in his lab.
The test went from low to high db in rapid succession, hence my statement like a wave, and just ran it until the prototype started falling apart. Knowing this was an extreme stress test. From a physics standpoint, I think it operated like a cannon - please correct me if I am wrong, I would love to know more.

Do you mean PSW110, PSW10, or PSW100? I've never heard of, and can't find anything about a 101.fastbilly1 wrote:So I have been rocking twin Sony SA-W303 powered subs for my home theater for a while. But as of five minutes ago I was offered a Polk PSW101 at a very cut rate. My receiver only puts out one sub line, so I have been daisy chaining the subs.
So do I replace the Sony's with the Polk or do I try to figure a way to run all three subs at the same time?
I owned a polk PSW10, it was weak. If that's the model I'd keep the Sony subs going as well.
I picked up a Sonance "The Sub" at a thrift shop a while back. I had to replace the amp plate, but this thing is built like a tank. It only plays to around 24hz with any meaningful output. It does so without ever distorting or chuffing though. Polks are notorious for chuffing and bottoming out if they are pushed.
Don't get me wrong, for the price they are a good choice. I just don't think you would be happier than with your multiple Sonys. Perhaps if it was a PSW505, even then it is always best to use two subwoofers in your room to help eliminate standing waves.
