Correct. The marines are actually no smarter than any of the other enemies; it was all careful level design and good use of scripting.Exhuminator wrote:The marine AI in Half-Life remains the most impressive I've seen in an FPS. Was it so impressive because it was running on predestined scripts? As in scripts tailored to the specific level design? What single player FPS campaign are you playing?

PLAY KING'S FIELD.
Re: What single player FPS campaign are you playing?
I'm playing the Nvidia Shield Portable version of Half Life 2 right now.

What's cool is that, plot wise it basically makes sense. They were sent in to KILL YOU!MrPopo wrote:The level design in Half Life 2 doesn't have nearly as much enemy flanking as Half Life 1 does, so the Combine seems less effective. What made the marines tough was the level design and scripts that involved groups of them flanking you and flushing you out with grenades. There was no real safe way to fight them other than running up in their face and giving them one or two barrels, as they tended to run from close combat.
So I wrapped up Quake 1 today. Overall, pretty damn cool. Still disappointed there was only like ~4 sci-fi stages haha, but oh well. I can't say I enjoyed Episode 4 all that much though. There were two levels that were very samey and huge chain reactions of long hallways. The level design just started to fall flat to me. Also, despite my struggles with the Ogres previously, I never thought I'd miss them! But I did. Instead of Ogres, Episode 4 started throwing these blue snake bomb things at you instead, and more of the (Revenant?) Spiders. Yeah, I just didn't like Episode 4's levels that much.
The boss battle stages were pretty goofy and random haha.
So, cue Quake 2 and badabingbadaboo! Holy crap nostalgia overload. It's crazy how well I remember these levels now that I'm back in it. And the music, it's so 90's and metal, but somehow works perfectly (when I'd typically prefer something that blends in a little more, but this is perfectly fitting). I went ahead and installed the "Ultimate Quake 2 Patch" that I found on Steam forums so I could get it up to 1080p and yeah, looks and feels freaking great.

Assuming the PSX version had no extra content, I'm pretty interested in the extra mission packs now. I wonder how well those would work with my retail versions. Maybe they're just simply more folders and files that would work with the main exe or something? I'm kind of curious about the Quake 1 packs too, if you guys think they're worthwhile. But I definitely know I'm going to want more Quake 2, holy crap I wish I didn't have to work tomorrow. Feels like I could easily marathon the whole thing in one sitting, very fun and addicting.
I think I've noticed what made Quake a bit hard adjusting to now as well, older games like that with tiny and centered guns on screen ... it feels weird. Quake 2 is a bit more modernized and the guns have a lot more gun space, also they're ever so slightly a bit more aligned to the right side like standard nowadays. It's a strange subtle thing, but I think it makes a difference for me.
Re: What single player FPS campaign are you playing?
The Quake mission packs (for both games) are just a subfolder that you launch with the -game option on your shortcut. So they'll work with retail just fine.

I apparently beat the other two mission packs back in 2014 or something so I don't have a nice writeup of both like I do for the other two.
Edit: Apparently I made a major write up of both in this very thread. Yay for hopping through the archives!

Re: What single player FPS campaign are you playing?
Thanks for the links and write ups Popo, they all sound worth checking out and it's cool there's some more weapons/monsters to look forward to. These games seem really short in retrospect, so some expansions will be nice. I will be dropping Quake 1 down to "Easy" though... hah, especially as you said in one of your posts there, the expansions are like the Doom ones and basically take everything up a notch.
I think I'm going to hit up Quake 4 again as well soon. I really enjoyed it when it was new, even on the 360 where it looked like it ran at 10FPS. So I'll definitely hit up the PC version this time. I like how it felt like an expansion to Doom 3 basically... I like Doom 3 more, but it's cool how Quake 4 was more to the point with its action and I recall it having some boss battles and stuff, which were becoming rare at the time in FPS's with the genre trying to be more realistic with military shooters.
Hopefully it holds up, but nobody ever really says nice things about Quake 4 and it's been long enough that I'm not sure what to expect.
I kind of want to hit up Prey again too, also on PC if possible. I wish it was on Steam/GOG or something though. I remember liking this one quite a bit and the campaign being fairly lengthy.
id-athon!
(well I think Prey was 3D Realms, but it was idTech!)

Re: What single player FPS campaign are you playing?
Quake 4 wants me to hate it.
So I got it running up and fine and all with Win7 and some tweaks, but there's issues.
I cannot find run speed in the config file. It feels unplayable as is. I had to tweak the mouse movement in the config file too, since the in game option for it was awful. I found this tweak guide page: http://www.tweakguides.com/Quake4_9.html, but throwing in pm_speed doesn't seem to do anything.
After a few minutes of playing, this keeps happening:
Who turned the lights out! I have no idea what could be causing this. The flashlight won't work, nothing works. The lighting seems terrible anyways, even with the help of Ultra settings and all that... Doom 3 was never weird like this. I tried forced ambient lightning on and it makes the game look absolutely horrible haha.
Well it was worth a shot... I remember it having some cool environments, but the combat feels dull as is, the CoD vibes don't help, and these issues don't help either. Might just skip this and jump to Prey, hoping it works better.

Re: What single player FPS campaign are you playing?
^weird. I played it a year or so ago and had no issues. I remember using a no-CD patch. I can't recall if I did any visual patches/mods, though.
Re: What single player FPS campaign are you playing?
I have the Steam version which is up to date. Then I did this fix and got this mod which I'm assuming is just a texture/graphical file pack and shouldn't be messing with much:
