I am due for an upgrade/re-build here soon. The mobo and cpu are about 5 years old now, I have one of the early I7s. I plan to get a 1080TI whenever they come out, and when I do, I will probably go with a new mobo/cpu combo as well as faster ram to go with it. I only have a 256 SSD, so that will likely be upgraded as well. I am kind of excited about it.

Honestly I've had ZERO problems with my MSI R7 290 for the past three years.

You should flash your R9 290 with the R9 390 bios, it uses the memory straps and gives a lovely free performance boost. Around 400 odd points on Firestrike and games liek Metro Last Light saw an average fps hike of 4-5fps.

Worth it for a free upgrade.

Skylake is really designed around DDR4 due to the voltage on the IMB, because of it only DDR3L (1.3V) is recommended, pretty much agreed upon that asrock boards and other brands that support DDR3 (@1.5V) will work, but long term the over voltage can start to do damage to components. If you upgrade, defiantly go DDR4, prices have been leveling out since Skylake came out.

Thanks for the info. Typically when I do a build, I go a notch just below top of the line, or lower end of the upper tier. So that will definitely be something I consider.

I should be keeping my case and PSU, but everything else will probably be swapped.

When you do the build let me know, if you are interested in overclocking a nonK cpu (to save money) I am running my i5 6400 @ 4.5Ghz (I can go 4.7ghz stable but don't like the heat) and always happy to help people save money via overclocking.

My card is a Radeon HD 7950, built this PC in 2013 and I don't think that was super high end. I wonder how big the upgrade would be? I don't really keep up with cards, but if it's a hefty upgrade for $200, that seems pretty legit to me.

Most reports put it on scale of the 390 - 390X level of performance, if it is true you should expect a a decent bump as the 7950 is more or less on par with a 280 / GTX960. You would want to pick up the 4GB model though or you would be dropping 1GB off the VRAM of your 7950.

You have to wait for reviewers to get their hands on it to know, but the card it looking like amazing dollar for performance.

The RX480 looks pretty awesome for a $200 price tag. What's even more awesome is there's an 8GB version for $30 more.
