Anyone considering a Quake 2 revisit should do themselves a favor and play it in software mode. It looks amazing.

Awesome, got Dark Places, copied over the pak files from the CD, found a CD music pak file, and it all works like a charm. Now for those of you that dual monitor is there anyway I can get it full screened on my TV/second monitor? If not I guess I can just tax out the resolution and play it windowed.

I dunno, you miss out on some atmosphere. A lot of Carmack's innovations with lighting are lost in software mode. That's the way I had to play it on my less than stellar PC back in the day so I was blown away when I got my first 3D card.wip3outguy7 wrote:Anyone considering a Quake 2 revisit should do themselves a favor and play it in software mode. If you set the TV to be the primary it should render over there.Xeogred wrote:Awesome, got Dark Places, copied over the pak files from the CD, found a CD music pak file, and it all works like a charm. That seems to be the only solution, I hate doing that... but guess it's not a huge deal. If I try blowing up windowed to 1080p or something I can't even find the window bar to drag over.
(and even if I drag the window over and change the settings from there, it blows up the game window back on my dinky monitor)

A lot of textures lost their detail from hardware acceleration. PCs now have no trouble running the game smoothly at higher resolution. You will loose some colored lighting, sure, but the sharper and more detailed textures and environment are worth at least a play through for the experience. Quake 2 in software mode today is a vastly different experience than what your PC would have allowed at its release.Gunstar Green wrote:I dunno, you miss out on some atmosphere. Heretic II uses the same engine, and I agree because that game looks very different in software mode. I'm not saying its looks better or worse, but its definitely a different experience.wip3outguy7 wrote:Quake 2 in software mode today is a vastly different experience than what your PC would have allowed at its release.
PLAY KING'S FIELD.

Is Heretic II worthwhile? I can't bring myself to care for Heretic, it's just Doom leftovers.
Never played Hexen though, which I think is weirder and more melee based or something.

I enjoyed Heretic II more than the original Heretic. Heretic II is a third person action game though and not an FPS. Heretic II was made by Raven back in their glory days, so yeah, it's pretty damn tight. Couple screenshots:

Unfortunately I don't think this one has made it to GOG or Steam yet. You can probably buy it pretty cheap of Amazon or eBay though.

I enjoyed Heretic II a lot. It's very unlike Heretic and Hexen. But the graphics are gonna look pretty chunky to the modern eye. I've got it on CD around here somewhere...
