Square Enix to buy Eidos in May.

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

Square Enix to buy Eidos in May.

Post by Zork »

I know this news is actually somewhat old but I had just now discovered it and didn't see a post here. Apparently SquEnix is gonna buy Eidos in May or so and I thought this was a pretty big deal since to my recollection it's the first instance of a Japanese gaming company buying out a Western one. Maybe I'm wrong but if so correct me please.

Now I'm curious as to what will happen to Eidos and a lot of it's IPs, especially since as of 2002 Square with Enix has shed a lot of what they think is dead weight in the Chrono Series, not bringing Front Mission to the states (Which by the way, I swear with the proper marketing, Front Mission would be a big game), Parasite Eve and any other franchises that they've axed along with just buying Enix to use Dragon Quest when they've had plenty of other great games. Now they're the Final Fantasy & Dragon Quest factory and even then the games are not that great. Yes I know Square Enix has put out original games this generation but lets face facts, they are not up to snuff at all, just like how they were in the tail end of last console generation.

I know they'll probably use Tomb Raider in some way since that was always Eidos' best bet at making any kind of money but what I really wonder about is if Legacy of Kain will be given a second chance of some sort. I seriously doubt it due to the circumstances surrounding the series such as a lot of the brain trust being in other companies, or they've left or they died (No joke).

Oh well, maybe one day we can see Raziel and Lara Croft in Kingdom Hearts 3 and Sora can visit the world of Nosgoth.

I guess we will finally see Tomb Raider RPG,
I really wish for Tomb Raider to get back to its high days, It was so much
of a big thing back then. It went the way of the Sega Sonic

Gotta disagree with what you're saying right here. Enix technically absorbed Square; the Enix shareholders retained 55% of the new company, and they split a lot of the leadership roles from people between both of the companies. Enix was coming off a 4.3 billion yen profit and Square was coming off a 16.5 billion yen loss. Both companies really had something to gain from the transaction though; it wasn't just Square wanting to get their hands on Dragon Quest.

I could use another Deus Ex and Thief game, but I'm not sure how SE will be able to bring anything to the table to increase the quality of these games. Combining two publishers that are putting out average games is destined to make one publisher that puts out great games? I really don't see the sense of this from the stand point of SE...I guess they are desperate to try getting some big name non-RPG products going and focusing more on the Western market, but I really don't see this as the right way to do that.

Ok so I had it in reverse, my point still stands though, they're wallowing in mediocrity and fanboys are still buying their games like drones.

I think it would make more sense for square to acquire another RPG company like Atlus instead of an action game company.

Mostly why it was so popular before because it was 3D and at the time that was a big deal plus their wasn't many games like it.IMO it's probably pretty hard to make a Tomb Raider game that's original & better than the first one.
Systems: Sega Dreamcast(x2), Sega Genesis(x2), Sega Saturn, Sega CD, Genmobile (portable Genesis), FC Twin, PSX, PS2(x2), GBA, SP, Xbox 360, N64, Showcase Arcade
