Search for games first, then decide on the console. Every console has great exclusive games, just need to research which you really like playing. Variety is a factor too, newer consoles have older Arcade and console compilations.
The PS2 a good choice due to the vast game library and a huge range of 3rd party controllers and Arcade sticks.

I know we've had this discussion before, but calling folks on the Nintendo side "crooks" is a bit much. People want Nintendo stuff, and they're going to pay top dollar for it. It's always been that way.
It is, however, a reality of collecting on the NES/SNES side. Now, the big-name releases, for the most part, are still somewhat obtainable, but it is certainly cheaper to get, say, an Everdrive N8 or a Super Everdrive on that side of things. I've got a pretty significant legit collection, but most of them were acquired years and years ago.
For whatever reason, though, the Genesis market has remained remarkably reasonable on price. I suspect it's because most of it is comprised of action games, sports, and shooters. But even the great RPGs are pretty decently priced. Dunno, but I'd consider taking advantage while you can.
