The Comic Book Thread
Re: The Comic Book Thread
Obviously that's not actually Steve Rogers, but rather yet another Spider-clone that was surgically altered to look like Steve Rogers.

Re: The Comic Book Thread
Over the years Steve Rogers has been frozen in ice, mind controlled by Loki, replaced by a Space Phantom, Imitated by a Scrull, ran for President, sent back in time to become a (blonde) Powhatan Indian, Died, and come back from the dead. This is just another Gimmick, but every fanboy is having an aneurysm over the hydra nonsense.

Re: The Comic Book Thread
weird, I was about to search for this thread. I heard about that too, and agree that it's just a silly gimmick. Especially when they were like "no no it's not a gimmick, this is really happening!" I mean, they could write their way out of it by just pretending he said it in blue text, y'know? Whatever.
Anyway, that's not why I'm searching for this thread. It's cuz I'm sort of kind of interested in reading comics again lately. It's funny how the nerd things of my past have come back to me in pieces. But I don't think I'll be buying issues - unless maybe I see some of interest at yard sales or something. I've been perusing some of the free Kindle offerings right now. Mostly stray Ninja Turtles stuff.
But I'd be more likely to pick up some full books. StrangeNova suggested the Alien/Predator Omnibuses to me, and I'm slightly interested in the Batman/Turtles crossover which is getting compiled in July. Ack really wants me to read Watchmen. But also I'm on the Marvel kick right now so...

You Noise, Pick up the hardcover versions of Runaways Volume 1 and 2. For my money, this is the best new original Marvel series of the last fifteen years.

I've never even heard of it? These are all new characters?
For the most part I think I'm in that phase of like "man, I wanna re-read a lot of the shit I was into when I was like 13, 14, 15" right now. But I'm happy to keep some suggestions in the back of my mind should I happen upon books in the wild or something.
Re: The Comic Book Thread
Could potentially try the "unlimited" digital comics subscription thing from Comixology. From what I've seen, it's limited, in that Marvel and DC aren't there (Marvel has their own unlimited digital thing), and even the series that are may only offer the first few issues. However, given that it's 30 days free, it might be a good way to at least preview a bunch of popular series, albeit not the big name superhero ones.

I had considered Comixology because it's so cheap. I mean $5/mo is pretty much one comic book IRL, right? And actually it does have some stuff I'm interested in (like the Dark Horse Alien stuff for instance). But I didn't realize there was a 30 day trial, so yeah seems like a perfect way to cherry pick. Thanks for the heads up there.
I'd look into the Marvel Unlimited depending on price. Like, I don't really want to "collect" comics. But I'm interested in reading them. At the same time, if it's too pricey then I'll start to feel like "damn, I could have just gotten some full volumes for cheaper than this."
DC... I'm not so interested in. I mean, I like some of the Batman stuff and all. But I've never cared much for the majority of the DC universe.
EDIT: I should note that my phone and tablet are both Windows devices.

Yeah. All new characters with occasional cameos by other Marvel characters like Cloak and Dagger. Runaways is written by by Brian K. Vaughan (Y: The Last Man, Ex Machina, Pride of Baghdad, and Saga) with art by Adrian Alphona and Takeshi Miyazawa. Later on, Joss Whedon contributed to the series.
Good Stuff. Runaways really turns the superhero genre on its ear.
You won't find the hardcover versions in the wild, but they're available online. You might find the digest versions of Runaways in the wild. They're smaller, manga-sized booklets. Just checked Amazon. Looks like the hardcover collection has been re-released in paperback. look for issues 1-18. The digest versions have fewer issues in each digest, so the volume numbering is off.
Edit: By the way, when it comes to "man, I wanna re-read a lot of the shit I was into when I was like 13, 14, 15"... you may find that it doesn't hold up so well. I remember thinking that SPAWN was the coolest, most mature comic book in the world when I was thirteen. I re-read a couple of issues of SPAWN as an adult. What the hell is this garbage? The word "mature" doesn't really apply anymore. It's a teenage boys pointless power fantasy.

Cool!
(Y: The Last Man, Ex Machina, Pride of Baghdad, and Saga)
I don't know what these things are, haha. I'm obviously out of the loop. I've honestly not read a Marvel comic since the mid-90's. Like, Generation X is "new" in my head haha.

Awesome!

Nice - I actually prefer paperback for comfort.

The new Ms. Marvel is also a pretty awesome read. She's a more optimistic and less angsty young Peter Parker.
