I preferred Shovel Knight as well but I was impressed at how different Plague Knight was.

I preferred the main campaign, but Plague Knight's addition is so well thought out that it was a very welcome addition. He plays a ton differently for sure. His mobility is top-notch, if you can get the controls down. He's pretty awkward to use at first. He's also got some incredible offensive firepower with the right setup.

Agreed. It is almost a completely different experience (and a totally awesome thing to give away for free!).

I'm not sure this would be unpopular really, but the going direction of modern gaming on consoles, I find that arcade games have more depth and entertainment value now and they're intentional quarter munchers.

I hate Cave Story, FEZ, Bastion, and probably a dozen or so more small budget/indie games.
But Shovel Knight knocked it out of the park for this cynical indie gamer here. I freaking loved it and I don't think Mighty No.9 will beat it.
The final boss theme made me think I was encountering Zeromus from FF4 again. Damn it was so epic.

FEZ is god awful, I'm sorry I ever got it as part of a cheap bundle on GoG and Steam. Somehow Fish was able to get an inflated ego off that and I still can't figure out why. Bastion or the game since transistor I got for almost nothing last seasonal sale on GOG, yet to try them, but now Cave Story the original old AG translated game (and 3DS cart release) I like that one. It's not godly like people claim but it's not garbage by any means, just good.

I liked Cave Story when it came out but it was before we were drowning in indie Metroidvanias with retro graphics, as it's primarily the spark that caused them. I don't know how well the game holds up now but it was a trend-setter.

Cave Story and FEZ are aight in my book.
I'm gonna check out Might No. 9 when it comes to Wii U. Looks solid but I hate the toddlery little Mega Man protagonist. At least he's not wearing a speedo.

Well I got the 3DS Cave Story cart version around a year or so after it came out from an online forum member site like this 3D sleeve and all, held onto it thankfully ever since now that it has got into stupid pricing ranges for whatever reason (as most 3DS don't.) Given my years earlier time with the old Windows game and then that years later I think it aged quite well as I'm not huge on SOTN knockoff stuff anymore and never was largely into it then either (picky I guess.)

Damn... I thought Plague Knight's campaign had all new levels and new bosses and such. Oh well. I'm still stoked to give Shovel Knight a go tonight. Soon as I finish this cup of coffee, me and my 2DS are gonna shovel yo.
I thought Cave Story was decent, up until the final boss rush crap. Really hated the end game in that one. I played Cave Story back when AGTP first translated it back in 2005. At that time it still seemed pretty fresh. But boy did it ever kick off a wave of uh... inspiration. Let's call it inspiration.
I did enjoy Gish back in 2004. Who remembers Gish? Never played FEZ because Phil Fish. Braid looked like pompous shit so I never touched that. I wouldn't mind trying Limbo someday. Definitely gonna give Freedom Planet a try! Super Meat Boy is OK but it gets old quick. I Wanna Be The Guy is fun too, but only if you enjoy memorizing every second of a platformer. Who knows what I'm forgetting? I'm sure I'm forgetting plenty. Indie retro platformers have been a dime a dozen for many years now. I'm sure some of them are super great, but the signal to noise ratio is so damned hard to parse.
Speaking of NES platformers though, has anyone played the Battle Kid games besides me?:

If anyone can actually beat them, it's gotta be Sarge!
