And less than four weeks till school ends, which means I can participate soon :D Not that I have a full list atm, but I guess a partial list is better than no list?

What I have so far:
Super Mario World (SNES)
Ultimate Doom (GOG)
Tomb Raider (GOG)
He does the same thing to me. He makes me HATE that my tender ass hole isn't ready for the abuse King's Field and Dark Souls dish out.

I think the reason so many reviewers hated Shadow Tower back in 1999, is because the game really is psycho-hard for the first two hours or so. But if you stick it out past that, the difficulty tapers off dramatically, and the brilliance of the game's design starts to really shine through. I honestly believe you could handle Shadow Tower, I've seen you beat some pretty tough games.

Shadow Tower only costs $5.99 on the PSN store, and is available for PS3/PSP/Vita:

I'm not sure if the PS3 or Vita do any graphical upscaling. I am playing the game on ePSXe using Pete's OpenGL2 GPU plug-in, which enhances polygons to be cleaner and textures to be clearer (to put it simply). Also ePSXe allows for a better framerate than the PS1 would have had.

All of those are legit classics. I have not played Tomb Raider much. Super Mario World is amazing and I absolutely loved it. Original DOOM is just pure aught oldschool 90's FPS fun. Just like the new DOOM is apparently.

Well you never know till you try, so try!

Also I can't speak for Dark Souls yet, I haven't played it. But I'll tell you what, when I do play the Souls games... Demon's Souls and Dark Souls better break my precious pink ass in half, because if they are easier than the King's Fields and Shadow Towers, than I will never let all you pansies live it down.
PLAY KING'S FIELD.

No game by From Software is that hard. If you want something difficult, go play Electronic Super Joy, Holy Diver, Recca, or Wizardry.

So what am I to think of years of reading people lamenting the Souls series games' "legendary" difficulty? That these games are not actually hard? Or that these folks just suck at games?

I think he meant that none of their games are hard enough to give you that kind of a challenge. Or he's insane.

No, they're definitely hard. It's just they're a certain kind of hard. They're the type that punishes rushed or careless decisions.

Now that I know what to do, though, I'm not sure Holy Diver is that hard... aw, who am I kidding, that was brutal stuff.

This, basically.

I died multiple times playing Demon's Souls. (Oh, no!) I had to restart some areas. At no point in the game, however, did I doubt my ability to finish the game, and once I learned its mechanics, I was able to get through some of the game's most difficult sections on my first or second attempt. I had the same experience with King's Field IV.

Accomplishing a certain task in Electronic Super Joy, however, is so hard that, for several days, I assumed that the Wii U port was glitched in a way that made accomplishing it impossible. I almost gave up, but I am glad that I persisted so that I could die over 700 times trying to beat this level. Also, Recca is basically impossible without save states.

It has long been my suspicion that the Souls games are probably not so hard. Rather they probably just seem difficult compared to the typical lily-assed popular showboat action games of the seventh generation. I've beaten quite a few 360 action-adventure games, and all of them were pieces of cake, outside Bionic Commando. (And I'm not talking about Rearmed, I'm talking about this.) I am looking forward to finding out if this hypothesis is the truth for myself, in the not too distant future. I'm getting closer every hour I play through Shadow Tower.
PLAY KING'S FIELD.
