I tried hard to love DOOM 3, but after two hours with the game it had already become incredibly repetitive and predictable. It was pretty damned disappointing and that's not even talking about the stupid "can't hold a flashlight while you shoot" design. The new DOOM looks infinitely better than 3 was.

There was at least a flashlight hack that fixed that issue, right?

Yep. Doom 3 BFG also had this as a standard, much easier to play game because of it.

Oh, that level. Very nice.

Has anyone gotten to any of the bosses yet?

I just quit for the night after taking down the Cyberdemon.
At first I was like, "is that it?" Then I was like, "OH FUCK, THAT WASN'T IT!"
I was kind of surprised. Bosses in FPS games usually don't do much for me because they're often just bullet sponges that you have to circle strafe for a while but they did a pretty good job with it. He's got some abilities that force you to react and it's a fun fight.

Well, add me to the growing list of people who think the new Doom is excellent. I'm only to the 4th area, but totally enthralled by everything this game is throwing out so far.

Yeah, the duct tape mod. But having to hack something that rudimentary just says everything about how boneheaded the initial design was.

Yeah, the bosses in Doom are really quite enjoyable. They don't go with the "only vulnerable 5% of the time" design and they don't go with "circle strafe and win"; you actually need to be pretty active in how you avoid their attacks.
