What single player FPS campaign are you playing?
Re: What single player FPS campaign are you playing?
IGN gave it a 7.1 because it gets "repetitive". You kill things in Doom. What else were they expecting?
Look forward to this year's 9.5+ for the new COD, because that series is innovative with each and every release, which is about what, quadruple as many Doom titles as we've gotten by this point?
Oh IGN...
I think it's weird Bethesda didn't ship out review copies or whatever though. Unfortunately that makes me believe they didn't have much faith in the game. I hope the fans and people can turn it around.

This is the IGN "verdict":
IGN wrote:Doom is a tale of two very different shooters (and one quirky creation tool). The single-player campaign's reverent worship of the series' roots results in an old-school run-and-gun shooter which feels like imitation Doom, a cover of an old hit which nails all the right power chords but isn't exactly transformative. The multiplayer's attempts to borrow from the new to reinvigorate the old results in an experience which won't satisfy either school of thought. SnapMap, meanwhile, is a blend of weird and simple and endearing.

I like RPS's verdict more:
Propulsive, thrilling and breathless, DOOM is the triumph I never expected. I just can’t see there being a better shooter this year, I really can’t.

Based on videos I've watched of the game, that's what I figured. A polished blast from the past rehash. Which is cool if that's what you like.IGN wrote:The single-player campaign's reverent worship of the series' roots results in an old-school run-and-gun shooter which feels like imitation Doom, a cover of an old hit which nails all the right power chords but isn't exactly transformative.
SnapMap reminds me of the original DOOM WAD editors for editing WAD files. I made a lot of custom WADs for DOOM back in the 90s. Pretty cool that they brought that concept back again with SnapMap.

If they were expecting a transformative sequel they were barking up the wrong tree. The marketing was pretty clear from the beginning that what they were making was Doom.Ack wrote:This is the IGN "verdict":

I doubt their verdict is necessarily inaccurate it's just not what the writer expected for whatever reason.
SnapMap really excites me, it makes me think of the community test chamber creator in Portal 2 which I've had great fun with.

There's a quote for the front of the GOTY edition ;pElkinFencer10 wrote:IGN is fucking stupid. Just in general. Here's my verdict.

All I need now is some lube dyed red and a cacodemon fleshlight and my bizarre Doom review will be a reality.

Re: What single player FPS campaign are you playing?
So I just played the new Doom for two hours and all I can say is they did it. Those glorious bastards did it. It's everything my nine-year-old-self imagined Doom was. I could not wipe the maniacal grin off of my face the entire time.
And it's not just the ripping and tearing either. The speed, arcade action and metal soundtrack would have almost been enough but the large explorable areas with well hidden secrets that don't treat the player like a complete moron really surprised me.
I haven't had to throw my pessimism in the trash this hard since Metroid Prime. It is what it promised to be. Even the melee takedowns which I thought were going to completely ruin the flow of the game are seamlessly integrated in a way that only adds to the manic action.
Maybe the thrill will die down after a few more hours but right now I'm shocked by how much fun this game is. It's exactly what I wanted out of all of the previous "retro" inspired FPS games.
I still wish they had called it Doom 4 or Doom: Subtitle though. You can't have everything I guess. If they were trying to make a statement by simply calling it Doom, well, message received I suppose.
