Detroit Metal City | 12 eps OVA | 2008 | 10/10

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Detroit_Metal_City

I've mentioned before that I have a huge library of games spanning decades, most of which I haven't played yet. The same is true for my anime collection. I've got tons of stuff collected for years, that I get to as I have time. So here we have an anime I acquired in 2008, but only got around to watching in 2016. That's just how I roll. I roll realll slow.

Anyway, Detroit Metal City is a comedy about a death metal band headed by a guy who does not want to be a death metal singer. He actually wants to be a folk pop star and sing love songs. Except his folk pop stuff gets nowhere, whereas his work with DMC is massively popular and actually earns him a living. This causes the guy to have a bit of a Jeckle and Hyde kind of life. But really no amount of me explaining this genius anime will do it justice.

I don't casually throw around terms like "utterly brilliant" but Detroit Metal City is utterly brilliant. It's the funniest comedic anime I've ever seen. I'm talking laugh out loud multiple times per episode. I'm talking laughing so loud I scare my dogs. If you have the right sense of humor for DMC's dark fucked up jokes, you'll be in love. If me using the word "fucked" in that prior sentence bothers you, trust me DMC is not for you.

It's been a long, long time since I've seen an anime that I'd give a 10/10 to. But Detroit Metal City gets that score from me. Now excuse me while I go spank my capitalist pig gimp.

Been watching a couple of shows lately.

Only four episodes in, but still enjoying Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress. It's got lots of similarities to Attack on Titan, but I'm actually enjoying it a bit more than AoT. The fact that I don't find the protagonist annoying is a great help.

I'm about 1/4th of the way through Get Backers. It's a bit out there at parts. I find I enjoy it more if I just turn my brain off to watch it, otherwise the copious amount of unanswered questions would surely drive me mad.

And finally, the third arc of Sailor Moon Crystal. The first two arcs were a bit of a let down, honestly. They stayed pretty true to the source material, but a lot of the changes they did make were disappointing. Thankfully, a lot of those issues seem to have been rectified this season. The humor is back, the CG transformations are gone and they've been adding little touches to the other characters so that they have more personality, instead of Crystal coming off as the just the Usagi and Mamoru show. The pacing for each episode is still sort of hit-or-miss, but all the other changes combined make that feel like a minor complaint by comparison. Still not as good as it should be, but much better than it was. Here's hoping they don't do something to screw it up.

I knew so many people that were pumped for Sailor Moon Crystal... didn't sound like it turned out that great at all.

The first two seasons of Crystal were very...meh. Part of the problem, I think, was the classic "sounds good on paper, but..." scenario. For instance, the original designs looked great. Nice mesh of the manga and original anime. Or at least they looked great right up until you saw them in motion, and many times it looked a little wonkey. I think part of that was due to the designs themselves and part of it was due to budgetary constraints.

With the third arc, the designs now more closely resemble the original anime and the show has the added bonus of a bigger budget. Plus, they got rid of those awkward CG transformations and replaced them with 2D versions at the new directors insistence. Hallelujah.

They also reinserted the humor that was present in the manga, but was sorely lacking in the first two seasons of Crystal. People remember those parts of the story, so why they scrapped much of the lighthearted humor, I don't know.

Really though, I think the biggest problem is fans selective memories. Yeah, a lot of people enjoyed the manga storyline better, but they also forget that the anime did a lot of things that the manga didn't. Like expounding on the supporting casts motives and personalities. The manga didn't really do that, so Crystal didn't really do that and I think that really became a sticking point for a lot of people.

Right now the show seems to have combined the two previous formats into a nice blend and fixed 90% of the problems. If they can keep it up through the next two seasons, I'd probably give the whole thing a solid B rating.... assuming they don't drop the ball on the one-yard line.

Vividred Operation | 12eps | 2013 | 8/10

Here's an anime that on paper sounds way too trope addled to work. A bunch of high school girls get special powers, and have to defeat earth destroying space aliens, using the power of their friendship to ultimately save the day. Yeah, sounds ridiculously cliche I know. However, Vividred Operation manages to do everything right. The girls have adorable personalities, and none of them are annoying. The writing has great pacing with plenty of charming moments and laughs. There are some surprises in the plot that actually work. The art and animation is consistently well executed. Overall, Vividred Operation is just bang up solid stuff. I will warn you if you don't enjoy ecchi, yeah this isn't for you. Nude breasts and constant butts in boy shorts are a thing here. On the flip side, there is a mad scientist who inhabits the body of a stuffed squirrel.

I got a question for you anime buffs out there. What is a good site or service to stream anime? I'm looking for one show in particular, Betterman. I was gonna just buy the dvd collection but it's like 250 in amazon and I'm not gonna pay that just to watch it. Any suggestions would be nice

The best free anime streaming service is KissAnime. They've got Betterman up right now, you can stream the whole thing.

You're welcome man. It's a great service. I've used Kiss to find quite a few old OVAs I couldn't anywhere else. (They have new shows there too though.)
