So some of you probably remember that I was wanting to splash out on something to celebrate 1000 games in my collection. Although everyone recommended Panzer Dragoon Saga, that one was still unfortunately just a bit too much for me to pay right now

So instead I got myself a 32X, because that's known for having quality to rival PDS right?

My 32X arrived yesterday and was dead on arrival. I reconnected the ribbon cables and gave the contacts a damn good clean tonight though (the cotton buds were black afterwards, damn thing was filthy!) and now it's all working great.

My system came with Virtua Racing Deluxe and Star Wars Arcade, and I picked up Knuckles' Chaotix as the treat to myself - I've wanted the game since I was a kid, even if I hear it's not that great

Other than Kolibri, which I plan to pick up for the novelty value, is there anything else worth picking up for the system? I hear the Doom port is OK as far as console versions of Doom go, and people praise Virtua Fighter - but I have that on the Saturn already, so why bother?

It's a bit sad that I managed to find more stuff I want for the Virtual Boy than for this thing

If you like prince of persia/ flashback style platformers then get Blackthorne. It's also available on pc and snes, but the 32x version has an extra world that isn't in any other version.

The protagonist is a badass with long black hair, sunglasses, and a shotgun. He pretty much ripped right off a metal album cover.

Cosmic Carnage is a decent fighter with a unique twist to its mechanics. I enjoy Metal Head, but I have a soft spot for mech action games. Tempo is a decent platformer with spunky graphics. Zaxxon's Motherbase 2000 is alright if you enjoyed Viewpoint, but the game is freaking hard yo.
PLAY KING'S FIELD.

Not sure if serious, but the Game Gear Fred Couples Golf is great.

Has anyone mentioned Shadow Squadron? I'd call that essential 32x right there.

Heck I'd even say Metal Head, if not for the radar that dies after 5 minutes each mission, forcing you into a state of aimlessly wandering around pixelated buildings for hours.

Let me rearrange your words in the way my brain kept trying to make me read them.

This I like
If you like prince of persia/ flashback style platformers
This I don't like (see my Oddworld post in the games beaten thread recently  )

I think I need to region mod my system to play Tempo - not all games are region locked on 32X, but I think that one is and it didn't get a PAL release. Zaxxon looks terrible in all honestly - I never liked the original either. Not a big fighter fan either.

Metal Head looks like it could be OK? I guess I'll look around and see what the price is like.

Aimlessly wandering sounds not much fun though...

I...don't know that I've even heard of Shadow Squadron. *looks it up* Ah, that's because it was apparently called Stellar Assault over here. It looks pretty similar to Star Wars Arcade. Is it better? Does it play different in any way?

I second the recommendation for Cosmic Carnage, and I quite like the Doom port, though strafing can be a little awkward. I really love the 32x release of Star Wars Arcade.

I know that it puts the graphics power of the 32X to very good use. It's similar to SWA and it also has a Star Fox and Starblade (arcade) aesthetic to it. 5 minute sample video here.

Yes just a golf game, but nice. Though graphics are not up with even the older Links games, pretty good for the era.

Unlike 32x Star Wars which has limited movement, you can do complete turns and loops in Shadow Squadron. Pick up the Power Clutch SG I mentioned on the previous page; a much better control for 32x and Genesis games.

Both 32x Virtua Racing and 32x Virtua Fighter are also decent. There are higher resolution ports, but then the 32x has exclusive levels and features.
Virtua Racing Deluxe – Sega Megadrive Genesis 32X

Not without reason is this entitled the Deluxe edition; alongside the expanded roster of vehicles the 32X makes proud its coin-op parent with the addition of time attack, split-screen two player, and unlockable mirror modes. Two additional tracks are also present, Highland, and the sublime Sand Park desert courses. This brilliant realisation of Virtua Racing utterly trounces the abysmal Saturn conversion, and ranks as one of the best home translations of the legendary arcade original. Worth owing a 32X for? Undoubtedly.

Even though the system was positively done for, Sega also put out a late port for the fortuneless 32X. The characters of course turned even blockier, but otherwise it was a great presentation of the hardware's untapped potential. This version also added a tournament and a ranking mode, which grades the player according to certain performance criteria (the completion time is the only indicator of skill in arcade mode), and offered a bunch of new options like arena size adjustment, several angled camera settings, and a selection of differently colored costumes.
