There's a level (I think in a factory?) where you can grind for infinite lives too. Right at the start theres an extra life over a pit. It's actually a 2UP - grabbing it causes you to die, but you still gain a live from it. And you respawn right before it, so you can do it endlessly. The live counter stops rising at 9, but you can have up to 255 lives iirc, it'll just display 9 until you drop all the way back to 8.

Well, that makes things easier.

As for the complex, it's all running together in my head. I didn't like the one with the plane doors that open up and make you die instantly, and I didn't like the one on the freeway with all the grenade tossers and ninja ladies and whatnot.

Just for you, Exhuminator! I needed an excuse to play through it, anyway. My impressions are probably less than charitable.

It is a Wolfteam game, so it plays really quickly, and has some neat effects. Some of the graphic design is good, but some just seems really bland, without much to really stand out from the backgrounds and whatnot. The anime scenes seem pretty cool, but I don't know that it's enough to save it.

No, my gripe is that some of the level design is... weird, to say the least. Other games have implemented some of these ideas, but they just feel sketchy here. I'm sure part of that is the controls. Annet feels pretty awesome to control, but the hit detection is actually pretty iffy for both whacking enemies and platforming. It just doesn't feel very solid, like it's all kinda duct-taped together. I like that you get these cool magic spells, and you really do have to use them effectively to get through. The last boss, for example, goes down pretty well with that explosive fireball shot. But that last area? Not cool. The little swarming flying dragon things are awful. You have to use that crowd-control shot, but even then, they're incessant. It's just not very fun with those little buggers draining at your life like mosquitoes.

Another interesting bit is that falling down a pit doesn't kill you. Actually, I think there's only one place in the game where you can. Of course, there's a reason for that, given that the rotating platform sequence is tricky, and you've only got one life or it's game over. A few continues, though... but I kinda save-stated a bit.

All in all, it's a quick action game that just feels like it needed a bit more time in the oven. I have to wonder if it's considered a cult classic because of the anime cutscenes more than anything, kinda like the Valis games. Because really, those are solid but unspectacular games as well. And this one shines at times... it's just that the lows are pretty darn low.

I can probably elaborate a bit more if prodded, but I'm feeling a bit lazy and need to head home! ;)

EDIT: Oh, good grief, Earnest Evans feels broke as heck. What in the world? It's like ragdoll physics gone bad, in 2D!

EDIT 2: Okay, it's done. And El Viento is an absolute classic compared to this. If you look up "reach exceeds grasp", this game's picture is next to it.

So this was clearly a game to test some really slick rotation effects. And it is impressive. Sadly, it also means the game is borderline unplayable. Your protagonist moves really strangely, mainly because he's a badly pieced together multi-segment sprite. And his whip flails around like Simon Belmont's in Super Castlevania IV when you hold down the button... except it's your main attack here. You tend to get hung on stage geography, you often can't jump properly for that reason, and if you linger on an enemy or hazard, your health decreases at an alarming rate; there's no hit-invincibility here. And it's really crazy when you go flying ragdoll-style, not just when you die, but sometimes when you go rolling out of control. It's kinda ridiculous and funny.

Anyway, I liked the various locales, even if there wasn't much to explain everything along the way like in El Viento. And there's some nice creativity here with the enemies and such... it's just the execution is so poor, it's a chore to play. I wouldn't recommend it as anything more than a curiosity, or if you're tracking down all of Wolfteam's games.

Sarge goes home every night, cracks open a cold one, and then ponders "what platformer shall I complete on this fine evening?"

Ha ha, I figured you'd find El Viento to be interesting. Nice review and you're one of the rare ones who've beaten it around here now. And Earnest Evans is so unique, it's like playing a game via a drunken ragdoll. I need to finish it someday.

As an apology here's two decent Genesis games to play whenever:

And its sequel...

File this right next to Bonk's Adventure - it's yet another "classic" retro platformer that I found mostly tedious and rarely enjoyable.

For the unacquainted, Wonder Boy was originally a 1986 arcade game by Escape (later known as Westone). Soon after it was released it was ported to Sega's ColecoVision-esque Japan-only SG-1000 and the Master System. Several sequels followed and the series became an absolute clusterfuck of bizarre localization, nonsensical game titles, and dubious character reskins. My first exposure to Wonder Boy was via Adventure Island (NES), where Westone/Sega's chubby little protagonist was swapped out in favor of Hudson's chubby little protagonist, Master Higgins.
Image
Wonder Boy is a platformer whose design seems to teeter on the edge of the second and third generation. Level design is incredibly simplistic. Most every stage is a long, flat, dull plane with occasional pitfalls. Thirty-six(!) stages comprise the game, though scenery is oft-repeated with some small variation in regards to enemy numbers and placement. There's some semblance of music - an incredibly annoying loop that repeats itself after a few seconds. Graphics are pleasant enough. The game looks very "Master System" with its vibrant green landscapes and kick-you-in-the-nuts blue skylines.
Image
The hero, some pudgy little caveman kid named Tom-Tom, can jump and attack should he obtain the hatchet power up. There's also a skateboard for faster movement (sometimes too fast). Health is represented by a vitality meter that consistently ticks down. Fruit must be nabbed at a constant rate to keep death at bay, and contact with an enemy spells instant doom.

The fast-paced nature of the game would be a welcome component, if only the controls weren't so mutilated. First of all, "jump" and "attack" are backwards. In other words - A is attack and B is jump. This is anathema, and totally screws with the muscle memory I've developed from years of gaming. Then there's the jumping. The high jump, which must be used frequently, is done by pushing the attack and jump buttons simultaneously. It's incredibly awkward, especially if you chose to also chuck a hatchet mid-air.
Image
The game's later levels are absolutely sadistic, especially when coupled with the terrible controls. Thankfully checkpoints are frequent and continues are unlimited so I pressed onward until the end. Bosses appear every four stages and are a complete joke - the easiest part of the game, really. Just avoid the projectile they launch, oh, every 20 seconds or so.

Oh and there are slippery ice stages. Fuck off.

Wonder Boy is not fun. Though the sequels appear to be vastly superior, so I'm not ready to throw in the towel just yet. Seems like the subsequent games ditched the caveman crap for medieval fantasy, which is more up my alley.

Every time I play something like this I appreciate Super Mario Bros. even more. Note to self (and everyone else): if a game's protagonist is a toddler in a loincloth, run away.

Yeah, Wonder Boy sucks.

The sequels I've played were better, but mostly bored me.

Whilst I enjoyed Wonder Boy well enough, I will say that you really shouldn't let this put you off the rest of this series, or even the rest of the Adventure Island series.

The Wonder Boy sequels in particular play absolutely nothing like the original game - they are sidescrolling action adventure games that remind me of metroid or zelda. If you're not patient with frustrating difficulty and obscure secrets that are 100% required in games I'd skip the first Monster World game (Wonder Boy in Monster Land) as it's an arcade port and comes with all the unfairness that entails. Monster World 2 (Wonder Boy 3: The Dragon's Trap) is the best game on Master System in my opinion though, and Monster World 3 (Wonder Boy in Monster World) and Monster World 4 (err....Monster World 4) are both equally fantastic games.

Adventure Island sticks to gameplay like the first Wonder Boy mostly, but it just refines it and makes it fairer and more interesting as it goes. I really adored New Adventure Island when I played it earlier this year.

FWIW, if you thought Wonder Boy was unfair, you should avoid the original Adventure Island like the plague - I think it's way harder overall.

I actually own Monster Lair and Dragon's Curse.

I've only played a small bit of both but I recall them being at least somewhat fun. I'll return to the games in the future.

Monster Lair plays a lot more like the original Wonder Boy, even if overall it's pretty unique. For my money it's probably the worst in the series, but it's not terrible.
