Re: Comfort Games

It's days like today when I think of these comfort games, and the memories attached to them. Anytime I get sick I have the strong urge to curl up in some covers and pull out the snes.

I just remember being a kid and staying home from school for being sick and I would play mario Allstars or super godzilla or something. And my mom would bring me crackers and soup. Man those were the days!

So yeah I'm sick today, and now that my kid is asleep I'm gonna break out the snes and play a comfort game.

For me its Terraria. I can happily go build a house or a ridiculous contraption... I'm a particular fan of creating water slides.

Or I can create a new toon and see how quickly I can spelunk my way to quality items.

Or work on a bigger project I've already had running.

Terraria is one of those games I always see myself going back to and although I have a lot of nostalgia for much older games I think I can say its pretty much my favourite game.

If a comfort game is just one I can't stop going back to because it's so familiar, I'd say I have a few.

Civ 5
Hearthstone
Crusader Kings II
Dynamite Headdy

My wife actually chides me for never playing anything new, and just wanting to replay all of my near-and-dear games over and over. Most of these come from the consoles that I grew up with.

So pretty mush these:
Image
Plus the Genesis Six-Pack not pictured.

On PS1 it's:

CTR!!!
Spyro1-3
Crash 1-3
Army Men Air Attack
Tomba 2
Legend of Dragoon
Darkstone (not really a good game, but I loved it as a kid and come back to it all the time)

On Xbox its:

Ninja Gaiden (screw Dark Souls, hang with Ninja Master mode, wimps)
Halo (duh)
Gauntlet: Dark Legacy
KOTOR 1+2
Morrowind
Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth (I just love the Lovcraft themes)

My only true comfort game from Nintendo is Ocarina. There are other undeniable classics like SMW and Melee from Nintendo, though I play these more now than I did when I was younger, so I feel less pull.
