This article pretty much captures all my thoughts on the comparison between Demon's and Dark. Although, I have a much bigger problem with trecking through previously completed areas than this author does. In an "open world game", there is no good reasoning for it.

After you beat Anor Londo you gain the ability to warp to and from bonfires.
Also, that article is kind of eye-rolling. A lot of nitpicking or criticism that flat out doesn't make sense. Besides that the PVP and recycling sections are particularly bad in that they're utter nonsense.

Uh, that's kind of the appeal of open world-ish games. Having a WORLD to explore.
And back-tracking through Dark Souls really isn't a big deal. There are so many elevators and doorways to open, it only takes like a minute or two to get where you want to go.

Playing this game again after a year off according to the date of my last post.
I beat
...and then I fell through the floor.
Not thrown off a cliff or falling through a hidden trap. No, I fell through the floor I was walking on.
Now I have to worry about falling through solid objects along with contending with the terrible frame rate. Dark Souls feels kind of rushed. It even seems more buggy than Demon's.

Well, I started playing the game again feeling pretty meh about it, but it was free on gold and I don't have any other new games, so...
I can't find a single damn person online. I haven't seen messages, or summon signs, or had myself summoned yet. I hate P2P sometimes. I also don't remember the Gargoyles being so hard, and getting my ass kicked is pissing me off something fierce. I also figured out something- other than forest areas, the game is very bland looking despite all the love the graphics got. Grey, green, brown. I love green, but the forest areas are about the only place its done well.

Alright, I'm putting in a concerted effort into beating this one. I've played to certain points over the years, but haven't really gone back and really had a go at it since becoming addicted to the series by Dark Souls II.
I'm in the dreaded Blighttown at the moment, at the very end. Taking on Quelaag. I summoned Maneater Mildred and got stomped. Like Quelaag did something that caused the roof to cave in or something and one-shot me. :/

She probably farted out a bunch of lava on the ground or something. Watch for that next time.
Don't feel bad about looking up a general map or suggested order for this one.
I'm working on getting the platinum for DS3 now, and I can say that DS1 is probably still the most daunting and complex entry in the series. Since you enjoyed DS2 there's a good chance you'll probably like the rest, but DS1 does require the most patience and is by far the most open one, thus in ways the most potentially confusing as well hehe.

Got past her the second try. I like her fight, first time in the game where a boss can take away parts of the arena from you, that's fun.
Got through Sen's Fortress and I love how its a madhouse with traps everywhere. Sorta reminds me of the Doors of Pharos in DsII. The Iron Golem is quite the beast if you forget to take out the giant with the fire pots.
Iron Tarkus makes this fight trivial, i just sat back and let him do the heavy lifting. He almost knocked him out of the arena, pretty sweet.

I recently beat DS1 for the first time including DLC and I'm most of the way through NG+ (which is EXCEEDINGLY rare for me to do with a game).
Blighttown was probably the worst. It was the put up-or-shut-up part of the game for me. At the beginning of it I thought,"that's it, this is where I throw in the towel," but I kept going and made it through.
After that there were still plenty of difficult parts but by then I'd learned how the game works and never felt like there was anything I couldn't overcome with effort.
