I sold off that which I don't really want to play. Xbox, DS, Sega CD, modern consoles (except the Wii, since my wife wants us to keep it), and many games of all systems that I don't foresee myself playing often in the future or didn't enjoy that much when I did end up playing them. It's good to be clutter-free.

Mostly just the realization of two things:
I can sell old toys I don't use much to get new ones.
There are a lot of really cheap, great games from last gen which I'd like to get before they get harder to find.

Does this mean you have no interest in playing console exclusive / handheld exclusive games of years past? Or that you plan to emulate?noiseredux wrote:I'm going 100% PC.

If I've seen any one (troubling) trend around here in the past few years, it's that less people report playing old games, and more people are focusing on modern releases almost exclusively.

If anything I feel I'm doing the opposite - I have so much newer stuff to catch up on ¬_¬Exhuminator wrote:Does this mean you have no interest in playing console exclusive / handheld exclusive games of years past? Or that you plan to emulate?noiseredux wrote:I'm going 100% PC.

I have note yet played a single Xbone or PS4 game, and I've only played the WiiU in the kiosk at gameplop.alienjesus wrote:If anything I feel I'm doing the opposite - I have so much newer stuff to catch up on ¬_¬Exhuminator wrote:Does this mean you have no interest in playing console exclusive / handheld exclusive games of years past? I'm not a big fan of emulation.Exhuminator wrote:Does this mean you have no interest in playing console exclusive / handheld exclusive games of years past? Or that you plan to emulate?noiseredux wrote:I'm going 100% PC.

Though that's sort of tricky... cuz I love DOSBox and Amiga Forever for example, and that's technically emulation haha.
But uh, long story short: I'm just all set with collecting consoles/games. This is something I've sort of dipped my toe into (purging) in the past, but am now fully committed. The truth is - could you name console exclusives that I'm missing access to that I'd enjoy? Sure! Is there any shortage of games for me to play on PC in their place? Of course not. At the end of the day, I have pretty limited gaming time as it is. And in the last few years I've found that my habits generally involve focusing on a small handful of games at a time for long stretches.
As for your modern vs retro concern, I don't even really look at games in that way. I just see games. I love new games. I love old games. Over the weekend I played both Rise Of The Tomb Raider and Jill Of The Jungle. Going PC only for me is not saying that I'm only interested in new games. In fact quite the opposite - PC is the one platform that gives me access to a constantly growing library of new games, while retaining a mind-boggling huge backlog of old games.
On a related note, I love exploring weird old DOS or Amiga or early PC ports of console games.

Yeah, but it is kind of like going into a buffet and only eating one entree. There's just no way I personally could say something like "I'm only playing PlayStation platform games now" and exclude so many other possible avenues of fun. But that's just my personal stance, I'm not saying you're wrong for doing so. Just trying to understand your mindset here.noiseredux wrote:Going PC only for me is not saying that I'm only interested in new games.
That's true enough, but PC is also a platform that excludes huge histories of handheld and console exclusive entries. Which again, is totally OK if that's not something you're worried about.noiseredux wrote:In fact quite the opposite - PC is the one platform that gives me access to a constantly growing library of new games, while retaining a mind-boggling huge backlog of old games.
Part of the thing with PC and me is, I spent many many years being nearly PC exclusive (say from 1997-2007), so that mystique is just not there for me. I understand why so many folks are going PC exclusive these days, the platform has never been as accessible and easy to use as it is now.

I get that. Though saying "I only play Playstation consoles" or "I only play Nintendo consoles" would be a much smaller buffet than PC is. I just feel like I've spent enough time and money in this hobby over the years to focus in enough on what I enjoy and not feel like I'm missing out.Exhuminator wrote: Yeah, but it is kind of like going into a buffet and only eating one entree. If anything I've found that abandoning console collecting has found me truly enjoying the games I do play on a deeper level. It's akin to when you're a kid and you get one new game and play the heck out of it for a long time. Because I'm not hoarding physical games, I just buy the one game I want to play when I want to play it - I then actually play it and focus on it and enjoy it for hours.
(Also, semi-related, I fucking hate clutter - so collecting is always hard for me because I hit a breaking point of "okay, I just have too much stuff!")
Getting back into Sega collecting last year drove this home for me. I spent hundreds and hundreds on collecting Sega stuff... then I got XCOM 2 and Spelunky HD and realized that for about $50, I had two games that I actually spent more time playing than all that Sega stuff.
So basically I just feel like I've figured out how games best fit into my own life.
