I believe that Thief Gold is the best game ever made, so looking forward to your review of that one.

Contra and Mega Man 64 are both solid choices. I had Sam & Max during its release time, and I found it to be a bit overrated. (Great humor but terrible puzzle design.) Resident Evil 3 is pretty good, worth doing. I haven't played much of Ogre Battle 64 or Sly Cooper, so no opinion there.

I am playing Virtua Fighter 2. It is drastically better than Virtua Fighter Remix. Pai is still the bane of my existence, however. Does anyone have any strategies for beating her consistently?

Oh lord..... I'm not feelin' it. Slippery ass controls that are BACKWARDS (A is B and B is A, y'all know what I mean).

Unlimited continues are good, I guess?

Just checked out the World of Longplays vid on YouTube - which is pretty much a perfect run. 90 minutes?! Are you kidding me. Oof.

Is this just a US thing? I hear people over there say the same thing about Alex Kidd, but both games have the controls the right way around for me when I played them.

I dunno if it is indeed a US thing, but my copy of Quartet also has the backwards controls which is a shame as I really dig the game otherwise. I figured it was just a SMS thang.

I'm totally with you on this, even having gone so far as to explicitly change SMS controls back to the "right" configuration via emulation.

I picked up Quartet last month and haven't tested yet. I will report back with my findings.

EDIT: Can confirm that the controls are backwards on my PAL copy too.

EDIT 2: So I did some research:

1. Alex Kidd had the 'reverse' controls in it's original cartridge format. The version I played, which was embedded into my Master System II hardware, had it's controls switched to be the usual 'Nintendo' formation.

2. Wonder Boy I can't get a clear answer on, but I played the game on Wii Virtual Console originally, so perhaps they fixed the button layout for that version?

Not surprised to hear that about Sam and Max. I've always meant to give it a go though. I love the comics and the cartoon and I feel like I need to play the first game.

I'm definitely very excited about Thief though, probably the most on this list. That's bound to be good.

If you guys are talking about the SMS Quartet, you're in for a good time. I spent many many hours playing that game co-op with friends when I was a kid.

I'll be starting on my list this weekend, first game up Metroid.

Maybe swap something out in favor of Far Cry though? I've always passed right over that game, and it might be a good choice.

IMO the very first Far Cry is half awesome and half terrible. The first half of the game is spent on tropical isles fighting pirates and it's a great time. The second half of the game introduces mutant monsters and darkens up the locales, and honestly it all stops being fun after that. At least, IMO. Far Cry didn't really get good until Ubisoft bought the franchise. However, the first Far Cry is a historically significant release, and is worth playing at least until you see your first Trigen.
