I'm curious about card games that are actually inside of other video games... how they work, how fun they are on their, and also if they exist in some form outside of their original game.
For instance, I know that The Witcher 3 has a game called Gwent, right? I havent' played W3 myself. I'm pretty sure Gwent also exists as a stand-alone game? Maybe?
I'm pretty sure one of the PS1-era Final Fantasy games had a card game as well - and I think that was ported to iOS or Android or something?
If memory serves there was a card game in Dragon Age Origins. I'm a little fuzzy on this one. There was definitely some kind of tavern game, but now I'm not 100% it was a card game - could have been dice or something - but pretty sure it was cards. I remember not really understanding the rules haha. I don't think it exists outside of DAO though.

Both Final Fantasies VIII and IX have a card game - Triple Triad in the former, Tetra Master in the latter. Triple Triad got a physical release, and it was ported to Final Fantasy XIV as well.
It's been ages since I've actually played either VIII and IX so I couldn't tell you how fun they were.

Yes it is called Gwent. It exists as a promo item for the super collectors editions, or in fan made versions. It is a modified version of Condottiere:noiseredux wrote:For instance, I know that The Witcher 3 has a game called Gwent, right? I havent' played W3 myself. FF8 and it was called Triple Triad. It had a super limited Japanese release and goes for bank now - a full set is easily $400.noiseredux wrote:I'm pretty sure one of the PS1-era Final Fantasy games had a card game as well - and I think that was ported to iOS or Android or something?

Fans have also scanned all the cards and there was a translation project at one point.
There are alot of digital card games that have made their way to physical care of fans, but I am not sure that is what you are looking for.

Triple Triad was pretty fun, though part of that might have been due to the fact that it had great rewards. Tetra Master had no rewards and had a major random element when two cards battled, which was pretty feel bad.
The KOTOR games have pazaak, which is a modified version of blackjack. You build a deck of up to 10 cards and then draw 4 of them for the match. Matches are first to two wins. During a game you get dealt a card with a value randomly between 1 and 10. You then get the option to play one of your hand cards, stand, or pass. Stand means you no longer get turns for that game. The turns alternate between each player. Being over 20 when you stand/pass is an auto lose. Person who gets the closest to 20 without going over wins; equal values tie. The cards that you build your deck with have values that range between 1 and 6, they can be positive, negative, or dual (you pick which one when you place). There are also some special cards that have a more drastic effect on the game.

I assume in-game representations of poker don't count, right? I think that'd be a ton of games. Red Dead Redemption had it for example.

You can play Triple Triad Online if you wanted to try it, I don't really think it's that good of a card game personally:

There's a card game inside of Digimon World 3 for PS1. I actually like this card game WAY more than the official Digimon trading card game (which is basically a poor copy of magic the gathering).

I'm not sure anyone has played enough of Yo! Noid to know what's inside it.TSTR wrote:isn't there a card game in Yo! Noid
