There are a thousand things I'd rather spend that kind of money on. One or two great vacations, down payment on a new house, more education, etc. Or if we're talking games, I could find a myriad number of other ways to spend it still.

Some people have more money than others though I guess, and there's a certain percentage of collectors who have mostly forgotten about actually playing these games and focus almost solely on acquiring sealed copies that subsequently have no functionality and very little purpose. Take that as you will.

For me I think some of them are simply desperate to find new ways to collect the same games they've already acquired because if not they'd have to find something else to do with their time and money. There are people on various sites that I wouldn't even called gamers, just collectors. I enjoy the collecting aspect too believe me, but when it overrides the desire to actually use games for their intended purpose I think that's a bit of a shame.

^...it is a shame. When that wall gets hit at this house I cash the game out as I'm not into collecting dust bunnies and useless shelf trophies. If I know it's not going to be played ever again it's gone. I will hold onto original period buys I made or were gifted, but even those aren't safe if age finally makes them intolerable crap then they're gone too.

I used 10 NES/SNES games and a MM5 manual I had too last year to buy the William's pinball table Pin-Bot and I have zero regrets. The only couple I kind of miss, one was Bonk so I got the FC version for $20 overseas, and the other DKC3 I can get back cheap whenever and if-ever I choose to for not much more than that. The other big fish like Wild Guns, EVO, Bubble Bobble 2, etc weren't worth keeping at all as they were average at best.

I'm going to take the opposite approach. If collecting those games makes them happy, then more power to 'em. Life's too short to worry about all that stuff, anyway. I've done a much better job as of late being happy with what I have, as opposed to worrying about what I'll likely never have.

I wouldn't say that's an opposite approach. You have no idea what those people will do with them, but likely most will remain sealed. The problem are those who hoard a lot, only second to people with a howling entitlement complex over more things showing up as they'll be losing money.

I see entitlement complex from both sides of this, both from collectors and from those that rail against them because the games are so expensive. I have no problems with collectors that want to keep their stuff sealed. Again, if it makes 'em happy, fine. If they see it as an investment, well, that's fine, too. It's really not my business what they do with their stuff. I have to try to check my envy at the door, because if I obsessed about someone else's stuff, I'd never, ever be happy.

Anyway, the ones we're talking about probably did wager on reselling one day, so that's why they're screaming. They made a bet, and they bet wrong.

There are some folks who do it for ego. They want to be one of the few, the proud. It can be as much about status as resale. They spent several thousand on Stadium Events because they wanted something almost nobody else has. And now they're learning they are less special. It's a hit to their ego. It brings them down a peg or two.
