I put two hours into Rusty for PC98 last night. Phew boy that game gets hard. I made it to what I think was the next to last level, but ran out of time on my final life while trying to find a Spade Key. This game starts off similar to Castlevania but it eventually differentiates itself quite a bit. Fun game, but it will make you rage. I'm hoping to have it beat tonight, just gotta figure out where that damn key is.

I rule at Contra but Super C just feels "objectively" harder.

First stage of Contra is like a tutorial level. Easy breezy and the boss can't even hit you if you stay to the left of the screen. First stage of Super C is all slanty, which makes it tough to hit enemies. Then you're stuck in a damn pit during the boss battle.

Level 2 ain't bad. Overhead perspective takes some time to get used to, but I generally make it through unscathed if I take it slow.

Level 3 has tons of enemies, but plenty of areas to hide. Lost two lives the first time that earthquake hit though. And the boss is really really tough without a powered-up gun.

Level 4 is where I lose my shit. It's a vertical stage with tons of shit raining down. Made it to the boss once..... got owned.

According to the internet this game has eight stages - almost halfway there! :lol:

I'm not so sure...I poured a ton of hours into Contra when I was a kid; so, I know the game very, very well. I rarely played Super C, however, and I think my skill level suffers due to a lack of familiarity with the game.

@Bone
That level 4 boss is the only thing in the game that takes it from the laser.

That's probably true as well. I have like 25 years more experience with Contra.

One notable thing about both those games is that I think the NES ports are way better than the arcade originals.

I agree completely. I spent some time with the arcade originals, and they both kind of stink...

I think it's because we didn't have a 30-life code to practice the game with. I've played quite a bit more of it in recent years, just because I have to mix it up after so much of the original game. I can't consistently beat it without continuing, but I can definitely beat it. There are a few "gotcha" moments that are pretty easy to deal with once you know they're coming.

I do think it's slightly harder, I just don't know if that's objective or subjective. :(

Tied in with some other comments, though, there's no question the NES games are far superior to the arcade versions. It's certainly not as wide a gap as something like Bionic Commando, but it's definitely a gap.

And Night Slave's beat. I'll review it later when I'm not dead tired.

So... 3 down, 9 to go. I'll probably do The Scheme next, but first I need to finish up Deus Ex Human Revolution Director's Cut on 360 (I'm near the end).
