The Sega Genesis Steam Workshop mod thread

Post by noiseredux »

alright, so I spent some time poking around the Steam Workshop and there's a lot of interesting stuff going on there. Some of it being taken down just as quickly as it's put up - perhaps no surprise. For instance Contra Hard Corps was taken down before I could check it out. How was that even a mod? I don't know. But I assume that even if you 'subscribe' to a mod, you'll lose it once it's taken down?

Anyway, let's use this thread to talk about some of the interesting or awesome stuff that the Workshop has given us access to via the Sega Genesis collection...

First off, as mentioned in the Together Retro thread, there's a couple of mods for Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine that will revert it to the Japenese Puyo Puyo.

I also noticed a bunch of (like 5 or 6?) Phantasy Star text adventure games that were in English. What are these? Are they the Game Gear games? Where there that many of them? How is a GG game a Genesis mod? I'm confused.

There were a couple of Alex Kid mods that are Super Mario World themed. Anyone try these? Any good? There's a good chance we'll see these taken down, I think.

The Phantasy Star Text Adventures were Sega Meganet games. Basically, downloadable Mega Drive games in Japan. They've been fan-translated for a long time.

Seriously, I feel like an idiot but how do I even play these games. I can "subscribe" and "add to collection" but that's as far as I can get. I am no good with Steam.

Once you do that go into the game, select the game you have a mod for and choose "mods" and they will show up there.

Thanks.

I'm gonna have to mess with this for a bit. I have a hard time getting SEGA Genesis & Mega Drive Classics to run, period.

Do you have a computer that you don't have to hand crank to use? That's the first step. Make sure it's at least bicycle-powered.

Not that I'll likely mess with it, but this is a really cool thing to happen.

Sure admittedly I have an old PC, but this hub seems to have issues that need to be ironed out. Top threads on Steam right now include: Launch Issues, Performance Tips, and Patch notes.

When I open the hub things get super laggy. Tried the games individually and they lack sound. Only thing running properly is Altered Beast... I'll keep plugging away, I really want to dive into this.

do you need the new hub to play the mods? I noticed there was an option to launch the old simple launcher - I'm just not sure if you can play the mods from there or not.

Also, "Patch Notes" isn't really indicative of any issues.

Also also, I'd love to see you get something like an Alien Alpha or something. A capable gaming PC that is pre-built, rather cheap, able to run any game you YOU, bone would want to play, and basically is emulating a console experience. Just saying.

Wouldn't pretty much any lower-cost "Steam box" style console-puter fit that same bill?
