Have you checked for disc rot?
Hold it up to a light and, look at the top (label side) of the disc and see if there's any pin holes that you can see through.

What console is the disc for? You can always try reading the disc to an image (depending on what type of disc it is) on a PC and see if there's any read errors.

If it's truly not the system, maybe it's a bug in the game?

I can check for disc rot, but I very highly doubt it. It's a PS3 game, so it's a blu-ray, which in my experience sometimes having pressing issues or some such that cause them to freeze at the same place. I had the same issue with Heavy Rain, no scratches or dirt or system issues.

Though now I feel like I need to double check the handful of PS1 and Dream cast games at my parents...

I have that issue with my copy of Star Trek for PS3.

I have a non-booting copy of Super Luigi U that has the same issue. Manufacturing error.

These arcade games will probably never boot up again.

Ouch.

Something I discovered today: there weren't any home video games released in 1974. This upsets me more than it should.

Man, I loved Robocop in the arcade. It also makes me remember that cool giveaway they did in Nintendo Power where the winner got a car from the movie, and the arcade machine.

EDIT: Oh, wait, that was two separate contests. The arcade machine was second prize in one where the winner got to go to the set of Robocop 2.

At least you weren't the winner of the NP contest for Total Recall, where the winner wasn't able to meet Arnold Schwarzenegger on the set of the film as advertised; the actual trip was delayed until after filming and they only had time for a quick handshake. But hey, they got a copy of the NES game. That great, awesome... yeah.

I haven't been posting much lately because I got a new job that has kept me pretty busy the past couple of weeks.

BUT....

I have been a fan of Nintendo's hardware and games for most of my life. It hasn't all been great; I never could get into the N64 and very little on the Wii was of interest to me. But overall, it's been a good ride from the first time I saw an NES when I was 7 years old to the 34 year old me that was browsing the 3DS section of a Gamestop this evening.

But man, the past day or so has been kind of rough...
