Is Bioshock 2 just a retread of Bioshock?
PLAY KING'S FIELD.

It depends on what way you mean. The setting is still Rapture and the atmosphere feels very similar because of this. It takes place after the events of 1 and you play a Big Daddy looking for a Little Sister. So delving into those odd relationships surrounding Big Daddies and Little Sisters is more what the plot is about. Also powers are a different set of things this time out and to me, made the combat feel more varied.Exhuminator wrote:Is Bioshock 2 just a retread of Bioshock?

wait, what? I had no idea. Wow. So all 3 games are pretty different experiences then, huh?Stark wrote:you play a Big Daddy looking for a Little Sister.

The you being a Big Daddy is mostly fluff; you still get an arsenal of weapons and plasmids, with the main concession to the Big Daddy is instead of a wrench you get a drill. I did enjoy the overall narrative more in Bioshock 2; the first one really only gets good when you're most of the way through, while the second game has a stronger narrative throughout.
Oh, the other big thing Bioshock 2 does to hammer home you're a Big Daddy is that to gather ADAM you actually escort a Little Sister around as she harvests (and protect her from splicers).

Because for some reason game devs still believed in 2010 that we all love escort missions.MrPopo wrote:Oh, the other big thing Bioshock 2 does to hammer home you're a Big Daddy is that to gather ADAM you actually escort a Little Sister around as she harvests (and protect her from splicers).

Not all escort missions are bad. Just the vast majority of them. I know I've played a couple of games that had escort missions that actually managed to strike the right balance between a completely helpless escort and one who does the mission entirely on their own without your help.Ack wrote:Because for some reason game devs still believed in 2010 that we all love escort missions.MrPopo wrote:Oh, the other big thing Bioshock 2 does to hammer home you're a Big Daddy is that to gather ADAM you actually escort a Little Sister around as she harvests (and protect her from splicers).

After RE4, I'm fine with just about any escort mission that doesn't have some teenage bitch screaming "LEON!!" at the top of her lungs every five seconds.
All three Bioshock games have a distinct feel to them. While the first two take place in the same place around the same time, the narratives and gameplay have their own feel (IMO anyway). Bioshock Infinite is hands down the best of the three in my opinion in both atmosphere and gameplay.

Infinite is basically an escort game.... But good.

Here's my review I put up on Steam for Bioshock 2. I hope it gets a point across.
What was wrong with System Shock 2?
What was wrong with Thief 2?
What was wrong with Fallout 2?
What was wrong with... Bioshock 2?
Exactly. I'm not sure why many didn't even give Bioshock 2 a chance. It's great to be back in Rapture and the gameplay is improved upon in every single way. Dual wielding plasmids/guns is fun, the new enemy types are great, the Little Sister mechanics are awesome, the level design is fantastic, and the story is solid enough. Tack on Minerva's Den and it's just icing on the cake. If you were a fan of the original and skipped out on this one, all you've done is a disservice to yourself. It's a great game, so would you kindly give it a chance?

Infinite is narratively an escort game, mechanically it's not. Elizabeth exists to let you open portals and occasionally toss you ammo.noiseredux wrote:Infinite is basically an escort game.... But good.
